Ek saal se Ready Ready puch rahe the wo log and boy, I was not Ready for this!
This is not your average review, it won’t be formal and it will be of spoilers. Avoid reading if you haven’t watched it yet. Dekh aao fir padhna. Aur jo dekh chuke hain, bekarar mat hoiye, aage padhiye.
Shah Rukh Khan
Srk in Jawan was phenomenal. It’s easy to not notice the good acting in such masala films but the efforts put by the actors are never less. In the metro sequence it felt the character was not normal. It was like the Joker in some sense (not comparing), as he came with a plan and he was doing a serious crime, yet he was joking around and landing puns while threatening and killing people. Loved that entire sequence and his acting.

In the hospital sequence he was not the same, he was calm and behaved like an elder leader. As Jailer Azad he looked very smart in the police uniform and as Azad, the best scenes were with his new daughter. Cute, emotional and impactful. As young Vikram Rathore he was good, like what you would expect from an army officer. Nothing very unique, liked the moustache on him. But it was the older Vikram Rathore that stole the show. Will come to that later.

Vijay Sethupathi
I just love this guy. He is very different in Tamil and other south indian films, be it romantic or crime related. But in Hindi he is something else. Maybe it’s the accent. Loved him in both Farzi and Jawan. His first scene was a great introduction of the antagonist. The red pill-blue pill thing was a good touch. He was a lunatic on another level. His scene with Deepika was cold, mean and dirty. The Santa Claus part and the one with his short henchman was hilarious. All he knew was to make deals and his end was as apt as it could be – by hanging.

Deepika
A sweet surprise. We knew she was gonna be there but not this much. She had a good amount of screen time. Aishwarya was an apt companion written for someone like Vikram Rathore. She was strong in all aspects. Just a thought, she played the lover and mother of Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan. Now, if they cast Ranbir Kapoor as Dev in Brahmastra Part Two: Dev, then she would be playing the same thing once again. I can already imagine the memes pouring. But personally, I want a different actor, not a double role.

Rest of the Cast
- The Girls – ekdum mast. Chote chote parts puri movie mein the and they all played their parts very well.
- Nayanthara looked really cool in her police armour, the guns and action scenes. A police, a mother, a lover, she was good all along.
- Sunil Grover had a small part. Him switching sides was a good twist. Death thodi badhiya honi chahiye thi, kya kehte ho?
- Vikram Rathore’s team did not have any major acting scenes but they did well.
- Ridhi Dogra had smaller parts which she performed as required.
- Seeza Saroj Mehta as Suji Rai (Narmada’s daughter) was very cute. Confident and great actor.
- Sanjay Dutt as Madhavan Nayak – Nayak nahi Khalnayak hu main. Maza aya. Accha role the.
- Mukesh Chhabra ko notice kiya? Kaun kaun pehchanta hai unko? Nahi jante toh google karo. In Tamil the same role was done by Yogi Babu. Yahi baat maine apne Alia Bhatt wale post mein kahi thi ki alag alag actresses ka naam hona chahiye tha Tamil & Telugu mein. Lekin tab logon ko samajh nahi aya tha, they started spewing hate. Thoda aware ho jao bhai, everything is not an attack on your favourite stars.
- Atlee ka bhi cameo tha. Par wo toh hume pata hi tha. ‘Making Of ‘ video ke time hi bola tha ki pakka cameo hai. Random set pe dance hota toh same costume nahi hota.

Writing
The plot was very well written. Kaafi time baad government and systumm ke khilaf bolne wali story ek badi film mein ayi hai. Both the farmers’ story and the children dying from the lack of oxygen were taken from real incidents in the country. The end, the power of voting , the message to the aam janta, exactly ye sab main bolta rehta hu. Aisa lag raha tha meri hi speech chura li. My friend was nudging me in the theatre.

Har cheez ka reason tha, har cheez ka connection tha. The characters were well written, the sub-plots connected the dots to the whole story. The screenplay impressed me even more. The storytelling was not linear. They were continuously going from present to past and back. You never feel bored as some new information is revealed that is taking the story forward, something is happening all the time.
I did not know I would be going for such emotional parts in a masala film. I was almost in tears and I do not normally cry. God, that was good writing. If you want to understand film or story writing, try thinking about the plot points, how the story progresses, how one thing connects to another, how each character behaves or transforms from start to end. Now imagine somebody wrote it starting from a blank piece of paper.

Direction
Atlee knows his art and he wants the audience to have fun. I think this was his best work ever! He presented each character of Srk so well. He gave quite a lot of emphasis on style. A hell lot of frames and set pieces were planned for the same. I wanted to take screenshots of so many frames to put as my desktop wallpaper.

The metro highjack was very well planned, they did not miss out on things ki ye kaise hua. Hospital action scene mei thoda fir bhi feel hua tha. Vikram Rathore ka rescue mission least liked sequence tha. The chase sequence of trucks full of money was again really done well. Simple hit and run, shoot blast nahi tha. They showed many many things such as nails, parachute, eggs and other things, ending it with the most stylized way possible – old Vikram Rathore’s swag-fueled bike blast.
I absolutely love team-mates fighting together and doing combo moves. Like Thor hitting Captain’s shield, Thor charging Iron Man, Peter and Groot in GOTG 3, etc. End fight sequence with the two SRK fighting together were pure Atlee mass moments. They were doing combo moves and there were poses and slow-mo shots. Ah.. gorgeous!

Songs
The songs did not feel integrated. I felt they broke the narration. And they were even that good. Never liked Zinda Banda. Also, had seen the whole song on youtube and in reels so many times ki koi novelty factor hi nahi tha. Chaleya toh cut short hi kar diya tha. Faratta bhi bilkul average tha. All three songs broke the narrative when I was fully engrossed in the story. Bollywood needs to work on this. Fans won’t like it but everybody knows why songs are put in movies. At least acche gaane bana lo aur shoot kar lo. Ya pehle se sab mat dikhao, kuch toh karo.

Anirudh’s BGM on the other hand was beyond anything. There were so many variations and each one enhanced the scenes to another level. It really made a difference. Aararaari Raaro was in background and the story was moving forward so that made sense. Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya was my favourite kyuki usme bilkul unexpected part aya tha – old Vikram Rathore. It was so good to see the two SRKs dancing together. Totally unexpected and delightful.
Editing
Red Chillies vfx was damn good. Things did not look fake. Except a few shots of the metro and a few blasts. Leave those and rest were top notch. Slow-mo thoda zyada tha kahi kahi but theek hai, not a major problem. Few things felt rushed but I can understand that because the length was already 2:49 hours. Deliberately karna pada hoga. Songs hata dete toh better rehta, lol. Ek boat wala scene toh pura hi kaat diya, leak bhi aya tha uska.

The Swades Reference
What is it with Swades that we not only love it but filmmakers put direct references in their films. Earlier it was Brahmastra where ShahRukh Khan’s character was called Mohan Bhargav, and now, they named his foster mother Kaveri Amma. Reason jo bhi ho, accha laga.

Vikram Rathore
Vikram Rathore naam jab bhi sunenge ek hi chehra dimag mein ayega – Akshay Kumar. Log toh pehle se hi memes aur posts bana rahe the, lekin naam ke alawa aur koi character similarity nahi thi. Lekin jab wo usi style se bolta hai – Rathore.. Vikram Rathore bhai kasam se maza aa jata hai. Everyone cheered.

My Favourite Character
The show stealer is the older Vikram Rathore. That guy is full of swag and style and I don’t give a fuck attitude. Yaad toh kuch hai nahi, log bakte rehte hain gaane sunta rehta hai. But when he fights. you don’t wanna mess with him. Atlee gave the best action scenes to this character. When he puts on his earphones, the bgm changes, that is very good editing. Whether it was Ruben or Atlee, good touch guys. He is funny as well. Has less lines but witty one-liners. Most favourite character of the film.
Bete ko hath lagane se pehle, Baap se baat kar!

Anger for RCE
You revealed a lot of plot points in the trailer. Most importantly, when Azad was being beaten up in the chair and older Vikram Rathore comes to save him from the shadows with his metal pipe or whatever weapon it was. You also put the ‘bete ko hath lagane se pehle, baap se baat kar‘ dialogue there. I know how it helped you in terms of marketing, I get that. But you stole my moment. Few people who did not watch the trailers felt that rush. If I was not in this business, I would have avoided the trailer as well. Interest aur curiosity jagao, plot points mat batao. Studios ke sath ye bahaut badi dikkat hai.

Verdict
Pura padh liya? Abe itna lamba review kaun padhta hai. But yaha tak aa gaye matlab pasand aya. I’m not a critic, stars nahi deta hu. Haan, recommendation chahiye ki kya time aur paisa lagake theatre jana chahiye?? Toh jawab hai HAAN. Bilkul jao, family ke sath jao aur bhare hue theatre mein jaldi se jaldi jao. Full paisa vasool mazadar movie hai.
