A Fun Film – RRKPK Review

Trying to do it spoiler free but kuch toh fir bhi reveal hota hi hai. If you don’t want any spoilers then please come back after you watch the film.

Ranveer Steals The Show

I’ve loved Ranveer Singh from his first film. He is a chameleon who gets into the skin of the charatcer he places and he becomes that person. Only this time I was concerned because of the clips shown in the trailer were not impressive at all. But boy, I was wrong. He portrays the perfect Dilliwala rich desi munda.

The only way you won’t like him or relate to him is if you haven’t met anyone like that. I have. He was a mix of 2-3 people I know. We have seen such characters before as well, one that comes to my mind right now is Bagga from TVF’s College Romance series.

He is weird, he is whacky and he is lovable. Ajeeb kapde, ajeeb harkatein, big mouth, galat english, bewakoof lekin funny. The film is aware of that, even the characters around him are aware of that. But he is who he is. He handles the biggest comedy scenes in the film with perfection. He is good in emotional scenes as well. Some may say he was not on point, forgetting that he is a different charatcer and his way of portraying emotions will be according to that, not according to how we perceive an emotional scene should be.

The Gorgeous Alia

Alia looks gorgeous throughout the film. Her saree looks are already a rage on social media and rightly so. Her charatcer is from a modern yet traditional background. But as the young people are today, she too is confused, scared of emotions, quick to judge, not able to always react in a well-thought manner.

She needs to be pampered and guided many times in the film. And she sometimes takes charge and steals the scene. Again I heard people judging her acting or dialogues in a few scenes, but I feel it was a well written charatcer with flaws that Alia portrayed perfectly. Her chemistry with Ranveer is also good. Something which I was skeptical of, after the trailer.

The Songs

The songs were an underwhelming aspect, not expected from a Karan Johar film. Songs should uplift the emotion, whether its a fun intro song, or an emotional sad song, or a love song. There were great set pieces, great costumes, the dance was good, but the songs were very thanda. Aap dekh loge, koi problem nahi hai gaano mein, lekin koi maza bhi nahi hai. Bas ake chale jate hain kuch elevate nahi karte scene ya emotion ko.

What I liked was the use of other songs by Karan Johar in the film. From old classics to Devdas, and even Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Lover’ were quite well used.

The Senior Actors

Shabana Azmi is the most delightful among all. You will love her. Dharmendra is also good, but his senses are very limited. Wish could see him acting more. Dada-dadi ki love story was a good subplot, both in emotions and in comedy. Jaya Bachchan’s charatcer was a bit caricatuish. She is just bad and angry all the time. But also gives really funny expressions in some scenes involving Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi. Basically she is Amitabh Bachchan from ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, and at one point she even says, “Keh Diya Na, Bas Keh Diya”. The theatre erupted with laughter and claps.

Direction

This film is a classic example of ‘bad trailer – good film’. Karan Johar has still got it. He plays on his stronger points, which is big sets, costumes, love, comedy, drama and family. But still, the overall film could have been better. Just the level of songs could have shot the film a notch higher. I felt the plot was quite elaborate but it was shown in a rushed manner. K3G was 3 hr 30 mins long. Karan Johar needs that much time to establish his charatcer dynamics and emotions. RRKPK runtime was 2 hr 48 mins, which is long for today’s standards, as people are not able to sit that much. I also feel a lot of the scenes were deleted. Maybe we’ll get to see some of them later, maybe never.

Verdict

I had a blast in the theatre. I was smiling while I was driving back home. I put up my story and slept. Subah utha toh social media dekh ke mood kharab ho gaya. Sabke pass apne apne opinions hain, sabne apni problems dhund li hain. What I could figure out was, sabne apna bubble create kar liya hai aur har cheez ko waise hi dekhte hain. Kisi ko Alia nahi pasand, kisi ko Ranveer toh kisi ko Karan. Aur kisi ko teeno. Ab unko, unka kuch accha nahi lagega chahe kuch bhi kar lein. Aur kisi ne sirf collection ko benchmark bana liya hai judge karne ka. Jab realistic film ati hai toh dekhenge nahi kyuki entertaining nahi hoti. Entertaining film ati hai toh usme realism dhundne lagte hain. Khair, isme ek alag hi post banan padega, I guess.

Duniya mein koi film nahi hai jisko koi na koi criticize na karta ho. Brahmastra ke time bhi yahi hua tha. RRR, KGF2, TJMM, recently Oppenheimer ko bhi kuch log boring keh rahe hain, aur kuch gen Z toh un filmo ko cringe bula dete hain jinko hum millennials dekh ke bade hue hain aur deewane hain aaj tak. So I guess it’s best to watch what ‘We’ like and not care about what others think.

Stars toh main deta nahi, na hi kisi tarah ki rating. Haan I think what will be useful for you is to know if you should spend your time and money to go to the theatre, or not. So if you liked Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, SatyaPrem Ki Katha, if you are an avid bollywood fan, agar bollywood ki filmy pyaar wali batein aur dialoguebazi apko ‘cringe’ nahi lagte hain, agar aap enjoy karna jante ho bina har cheez mein woke bane.. toh please jao dekhne. And do it soon when the theatres are full. Audience ke sath hasne ka taali aur seeti bajane ka impact hi kuch aur hota hai.

Aur agar aap inme se nahi ho, toh mat jao. Main nahi chahunga ki apka mood kharab ho. Kuch aur dekh lo jo apko pasand ho. Dhanlaxmi pranam!
