Trailer Overview
The trailer of Kantara Chapter 1 suffers from the same problems we have discussed so many times. Let’s dissect.
The Length
When you have a story to tell, a thought, a feeling, a glimpse of the world, you can do that as an editor, and whatever turns out to be the length, its fine. Let’s say it was 1 minute 49 seconds. But what if you were told to keep the length of the trailer close to 3 minutes?
Now you start adding clips, and you rework on your own story. For the new clips to make sense, you modify the story/thought of the trailer you started with. Now the thought, the feel has changed completely. Why? Because some genius made a guideline that your trailer needs to be near 3 minutes. I wanna ask, why?
The Plot Reveal
About 80% of the plot has been revealed. Ek jungle, gaav wale, gareeb, kisaan, majboor. Ek Raja, atyachari, villain of the story. Rajkumari ko ek common man gaave wale se pyaar ho ata hai, Raja ko pasand nahi ata. Gaav pe atyachar badh jata hai, aur humara hero, sabka saviour banta hai.
Twist bas ye hai ki Kantara ki tarah puri film mein nature aur unke Daev ka mention hota rahega. End mein Rishab Shetty apne Daev ko embody karke unki power use karke sabko bacha lenge, villains ko hara denge. Start to end trailer mein order bhi same rakha hai events ka.
So basic plotline toh puri bata di hai, film mein jo hoga isi plot ke around hoga. My theory is based on what we saw in the trailer. Baki dekhne ke baad ek bar iss review ko visit zarur karna aur dekhna kitna same tha kitna nahi.
War and Trade
The Raja takes taxes from the villagers, like Lagaan. They do trading with the raw materials at the port. Toh ye ek aur angle hai sotry ka. Then the villagers under Rishab Shetty’s leadership go on a war with the king. The love angle also plays a part in the King’s hatred towards Rishab Shetty and the villagers.
Just think.. how much of the plot points they have already revealed.
That Last Part
Just like the first part, the embodiment of the divine will happen at the very end, with this shot that they have been showing us since the longest time.
The Grand Sacle
Despite the flaws of the trailer, we should not ignore the grand scale of the film. I loved the behind-the-scenes video as well, when they showed the sets and crew members, including the junior artists. Set lagana kaafi nahi hota, usko handle karna ek alag task hota hai. As I love the process of filmmaking too as much as I love watching films, these things excite me. Even when a film does not do well, I always appreciate the honest hard work.
Visually Good
The scale of the film also adds to the visual treat on the screen. Something we see in Hollywood films. I’m talking about the detailing they have put in every set piece, which transforms into a visual spectacle on screen. Not talking about only the money shots, but most of the shots in general. From costumes to backdrops, every detail makes the frames look rich.
Music
Sach batao, Diljit ko lene ki need thi? It is very clear he has been taken just for the sake of his popularity, the same way he was taken and put forcefully into Jigra, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Baby John, and Kalki 2898 AD. Plus, he is not even singing in Punjabi this time, which is his signature style.
Jis tarah ka song ka composition hai, I feel Sukhwinder would have been an apt choice. But theek hai, Diljit bura toh bilkul nahi lag rha. He is suiting the mood of the song. I’m just mentioning the habit of producers these days. Jo popular hai usko ghusa do, hashtags badh jayenge, usse algorithm trigger ho jayega, zyada reach matlab zyada log dekhne aa jayenge. That’s what you will see all around you, all the time these days.
Final Thoughts
The only thing I’m actually expecting from Kantara Chapter 1 is not to be like Kantara. That film was only engaging for brief moments, while the overall film was a drag. The last act was superb, but that does not justify getting bored for the entire duration of the film.
Story wise too they have revealed a lot so it’s not gonna be much of a surprise there. The only thing that matters now is the screenplay, how the story unfolds, and how much it engages us into the world they have created.
I also don’t think the clash with Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari will affect either of the films. Both genres are poles apart, and people will only watch what they like. A Kantara of South films fan will obviously go for Kantara Chapter 1, and a Bollywood Rom-com fan who wants to have some song, dance, comedy, and light-hearted fun will go for SSKTK. So both films will have their audience and will only fail if they are not up to the mark.
