Trailer Overview
The Raja Saab is the next big thing from Rebel Star Prabhas, but the trailer does not do justice to the hype. This is not a blind hater review. Let’s discuss in detail.
Fan Service
The Raja saab trailer looks like it is only made for Prabhas fans, who don’t care about what is shown in the trailer, the quality of a film, and who don’t want to satify any creative hunger. Unko bas Prabhas dikha do screen pe wo wo pagal ho jayenge. Producers know this and that’s exactly what they have done. Toh hum normal log kya karein? Ignore kar dein film ko? Kyuki aap ko toh bas fans se matlab hai.
The Cut
Length zyada ho toh waise hi expectation khatam ho jati hai. Maybe just 1% trailers of such length are able to pull off a balance of quality, excitement and plot reveal.
The Raja Saab Trailer does not reveal the whole plot, which is nice. But they have done so by just randomly putting anything and everything without making sense. Ab ye toh koi baat nahi hui na. Plot chuupane ke liye “Kuch Bhi” thodi na dikha doge.
There is no flow, no progression in the trailer. It does not hit any emotion. Neither it scares me, not it makes me laugh, nor it impresses with the world they have created. There is only one part that was somehwat impressive and that was the end part. But more on that later.
Prabhas
Thoda late ho gaya review likhne mein and in the meantime, I saw a few posts and reactions on social media. there are only 3 types of reactions. One is the blind praising by fans. Second is full support by media journalists which makes it clear that either they have received samosas or they simply dont want to get on the bad side of Prabhas fans. And third is the genuine critisim on the right things. For the first time, I’ve not seen blind hatred for Prabhas. Not saying there is not any, just saying I have not seen it today.
Some people said Prabhas’ expressions are bad and cringe. I did not feel that. The film is in the horror-comedy space, right? And Prabhas’ character is somewhat non-serious. Toh sahi toh hai.; Mujhe toh accha laga. Genuine smile kar raha hai, warna Baahubali ke baad se sirf broody expressions mein dekha tha. Ab film mein overall scenes sahi hote hain ya nahi wo dekhna hai. But as per teaser and trailer mujhe Prabhas kharab nahi laga. I think ye perception bana lete hain na kuch log toh fir usko break karke uske aage dekh nahi pate. Have observed this many times over the years.
Prabhas Ki Awaz
I went ot watch Mirai and was surprised to hear Prabhas’ narration. The Hindi was quite good and clear, I was quite impressed. 2 din baad pata chala AI voice hai, makers ne khud bataya ki Prabhas se permission leke kiya tha. Pata nahi The Raja Saab mein Prabhas ki Hindi dubbing usi ne ki hai ki kisi dubbing artist ne ki hai uske upar AI se vocie changer laga diya hai.
Bhai ab toh bharosa hi uth gaya hai. Ajkal toh hero logon ke bhi 3-3 duplicates hote hain set pe, aur producers unko paise dete hain. Stunts ak toh samajh ata hai lekin wide aur back shots bhi duplicates ke sath hote hain. Kuch dino mein kahi face swap use na karne lag jayein. Pata chala hero ghar pe so raha hai aur duplicates ke sath shoot karke ₹100 crore fees ghar aa rahi hai.
Fans Are The Problem
Not talking about Prabhas but for any star in general. If fans keep behaving the same way, the makers, the star and all the middlemen will think that they are doing a great job and this is what the audience wants. They will never realize that somehting is wrong. That something needs to be improved. That technical and creative boundaries needs to be pushed. Indian cinema will not improve till fans keep aceepting mediocrity.
And its not only about them enjoying a film for the star. If they do just that then also its fine. But they also have to fight with everyone who criticises all year long. Now this is the biggest problem. The media and all the agents and agencies also dive into this fanwar mindset to earn money in between. Sabse zyada fayda inka hota hai, aur sabse zyada nuksaan Indian Cinema ka. All industries and all stars.
VFX
Kya hai bhai? Kyu hai bhai?
Thoda bahaut toh audience maaf bhi kar deti hai agar budget kam ho par film honesty ke sah banai ho toh. Par suna hai The Raja Saab ka budget toh bahaut zyada hai. Toh sara budget Prabhas ko de diya kya? Kyuki ye toh bahaut kharab hai.
I know the vfx would improve by the time the film comes out, but the difference in quality is so much that it seems they may not be able to do much. Aur sach batau toh itna vfx ki zarurat nahi thi. Bahaut se faltu ke shots hain. Let me explain in the next section.
Unnecessary Animals
What is the need to put so many CGI animal? I’ll explain the problem.
1. It increases Vfx budet
2. It looks unrealitic, as humans cannot fight/tackle such huge and heavy animals
3. Serves no purpose to the story
You may counter with me on the third point but just think practically. The film already has a massive Villa, it has ghosts in many forms, dust cloud, translucent, and Prabhas himself. Then there are three actress, you have comedy scenes, you have an exorcist who is not normal and a few more charatcers. Ab CGI animal ghusana zaruri hai?
Isse paisa toh lagta hi hai, vfx artists ko time bhi lagta hai har shot ko banane mein. Kuch faltu shots kam karke wo time aur paisa important shots pe laga denge toh wo shots aur acche ho jayenge. Pata nahi kya chal raha inke mind mein.
The Last Sequence
The last sequence was something unexpected and new. Wo reverse ane wala. Ye unexpected aur new hi toh dekhne mein accha lagta hai, kyuki ab toh hum sabne hazaro films dekh li hain aur har saal 100-200 dekhte hain. So fresh toh chahiye. I liked that scene, but I think ye trailer mein nahi dikhana tha. Ek toh waise hi trailer itna bekar tha. Ab ye scene theatre mein dekha hu lagega. Gaya impact. Unexpected se expected ho gaya na. New se old ho gaya.
Final Thoughts
I always say, if the trailer is not good, you can still expect the film to be good. It has happend many times. The opposite also happens that trailers are good but films are not. But you get some idea from the trailers and from this trailer, the expectation is definitely not sky high.
We have more than 3 months left, this means we will get another trailer. High chance that if you combine the two trailers, the songs, the short promos, you will know 80% of the plot. Feels like another film just for the fans. And anyone who criticises is either a hater or has taken money from someone (who they have already decided as Prabhas’ enemy).
