Chhaava Trailer Review – Vicky Roars Like A Lion!

Vicky Kaushal

There is no denying that Vicky Kaushal as Chhaava has nailed his role to perfection. He is actually making us believe that is he Sambhaji Maharaj in every scene. Look at his expressions, his eyes, his rage. You can feel what he is feeling. Even while fighting, he looks fully in the zone. This film will be very very huge for him, that’s for sure. And I’m not saying this because of starpower or scale or any other gimmick. After a long time, people are excited for the content and performance.

Personally I feel it’s not right to compare but I really want to say this because the overall quality has gone down in Indian cinema and nobody can deny that. One of the reasons I’ve been citing for a long time is the intent and dedication. Due to similarity in the story, two movies that come to mind are Panipat and Prithviraj. Yes, the actors lacked the intensity in their roles, but directors and producers are equally responsible for the bad product.

So dear Akshay, when people say don’t do so many films, and you reply with “can you guarantee ki ek film karunga toh hit hogi?” it seems you think we only talk about quantity. Actually we are saying do less films and do quality films, spend time in your roles, spend time in making sure that you director, your producer, every technician is skilled dedicated enough to give deliver a very good film. Don’t treat it as a 9 to 5 job, thinking your work is only coming to set and saying your lines. We love you, but you should also think about your level of stardom and your fans.

Trailer Length

Bahaut kam aisa hota hai ki trailer lamba ho aur koi complain na ho. I watched Chhaava trailer 4 times and each time I was so immersed in the trailer, I watched till the end without realizing the length or anything else. The flow and the pacing is kind of template based but yet done to near perfection. Loved it.

However, I would have liked if it was 30 sec shorter, and the only reason is, when you see a lot of footage in trailers and promos, what happens in theatres is that when that location comes, when the actors are in that particular costume, you know what scene is coming, you know what dialogue is coming. I don’t like that. Theatrical experience ruin hota hai.

For example, I would have liked if they had not shown the fight with the lion. I know trailer mein bhi money shot dena hota hai, promos se film bechni hoti hai, but wahi kehna chah raha hu, sab kuch template based mat karo, ki jo humesha hota aya hai wo toh karna hi hai. Thoda alag sochna padega kyuki results nahi aa rahe hain. Chhaava trailer se koi major complain nahi hai, I’m just trying to take this as an example to explain a point. Just imagine if you were not aware of any lion scene and you saw if for the first time in theatre.

Other Actors

Rashmika Mandanna – I like that she does not have a South Indian accent in this one like she had in Animal. Would have preferred a bit of Marathi touch though, like Priyanka Chopra did in Bajirao Mastani, but this is still good. Hope her role is also strong in the film.

Akshaye Khanna – Everyone is loving him as Aurangzeb and so am I. Trailer mein kam hi dikhaya hai but I’m expecting much more from him. From the trailer it seems they will be showing a lot of cruelty. But I don’t want just the army doing it. I also want to see how cruel and brutal Aurangzeb himself is.

They have just shown few shots of Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Diana Penty, without any dialogues. Good move, they will all be surprises for the audience in theatres.

Action/VFX/Music

Music and BGM ka bahuat samajh nahi aya trailer se but jo tha accha tha. Will get to know more as the songs come out.

I always say that the audience lets go of 5-10% imperfections if the overall scene or movie is good. We are still a growing industry and don’t have the best of technology and expertise, so everything cannot be perfect. So a bit of imperfections can be scene in Chhaava as well, but they are so minor that they are insignificant. Only talking about this because it is my job to go into details.

For example the lion at the end of the trailer, when it starts to run and when it jumps, you can notice that the scene has been sped up and the motion of the animal is not natural. Bade screen pe aur zyada dikhega ye. But the overall scene, the emotion of the scene in the story, the lighting and camera work, Vicky Kaushal himself, all these are so good that you cannot hold on to that 5% imperfection.

Chhaava Trailer Review

I’m pretty sure everyone has loved Chhaava trailer, everyone is excited for the film and the film will do well. Let’s see how much it earns but please note, collections are not the only way to judge a film. People having a good time is all that matters.
