Comedy
Comedy can be subjective. What’s funny to me may not be funny to you and vice versa. But there are general opinions about comedy, standup and scenes in movies/series that appeal to most and are actually considered funny.
Here is one thing I have observed in comedy that seems to be universal. Unique characters and ridiculous situations. And when these unique characters meet, their clash sparks comedy. When multiple of these unique characters are put into ridiculous situations, the comedy level elevates. Take my observation and try to recall all the comedy movies you love, especially the Priyadarshan ones, you will relate to my theory.
Unique Characters and Comedy
Abhishek and Riteish
I feel Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek Bachchan were the only characters where writing made them unique. Riteish’s character mixes up ki wo kiske bare mein baat kar raha hai, those scenes are very funny. And Abhishek Bachchan putting stress on the wrong words. Dono characters ki gadbad baki characters se bhi punchlines nikal leti hain.
Sonam Bajwa was unique with her Urdu but that part did not last very long.
Aakhri Pasta is a very loved character. His screen time was less. I feel they should have kept him in more scenes.
Akshay Kumar
Akshay Kumar is the only one who keep the comedy going throughout the film. Other characters are also there but he is the lead so more scenes, more punchlines, more gags were given to him. Also it did not feel like he was forcing anything. In a lot of ways it felt like our old beloved Akshay Kumar in comedy genre.
That Parrot gag from Housefull 1 was unexpected and funny. Monkey wala faltu tha. Logic nahi banta inka kyuki uska naam Aarush tha aur Deepika uske sath this and wo character hi alag tha. But comedy film mein chalta hai. For example, Golmaal, Dhamaal, etc., they are funny enough for us to understand its a different world with its own ridiculous rules. Housefull 5 was overall funny enough to forget the logic.
Also, Cruise ka naam tha Ayee, kyuki Papa Ranjit ki ship thi. Notice kiya tha?
Baba And Bhidu
The exchange of names I liked. Kuch alag sa laga. Their comedy was a hit and miss for me. I liked some of their scenes but not all of them were funny. “Chhoti Bacchi Hai Kya?” punchline did not feel funny because trailer mein pehle hi dekh liya tha. One of the setbacks of watching trailers before films, kaafi kuch dekha hua hota hai toh impact nahi ata theatre mein.
The Females of Housefull
Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, and Nargis Fakhri were given decent amount of screen time and punchlines. But not enough to praise them much. Sonam Bajwa’s explosion from Urdu to Punjabi was the most hilarious gag among the females.
Chitragda Singh was not given much weight in the entire script. Comedy toh due ki baat hai. Though I feel would have done well. Her small scene in Khel Khel Mein with Akshay Kumar was quite entertaining. Both have good chemistry. The director should have explored that. Missed opportunity.
Soundarya Sharma
I think they did her dirty. I understand that she would have agreed herself for all the adult parts, but doing only that? She was a sex object in the entire film and nothing else. Thoda zyada hi kar diya na ek ko target? Kaunsi lawyer aisi hoti hai batao? Sorry, comedy mein logic expect nahi karna. I know I know. But ye thoda zyada hi targetted sexualization laga.
Too Much Sexualized?
I know Housefull series mein those sexual jokes humesha se the but ye KUCH ZYADA HI THA. Did not feel like a U/A film to be honest. Dekho thoda bahaut chal jata hai. Even families bhi jab at hain toh thoda chal jata hai. Par ye itna tha ki it felt like cheating. At least Masti series type of films are clear from the start ki wo kaisi films hain. Mujhe adult scenes and jokes se problem nahi hai par ye U/A ke naam pe cheating si lagi.
Nana Patekar Wasted
I did not like his character or scenes. And what was that Phugdi song and dance? Zabardasti ka ghusaya hua laga. I have no problem with using Marathi songs, Animal mein bahaut acche se use kiya tha. But yaha out of context aur forced laga. The best part of Nana Patekar was bar bar dhoti ud jana. Serious dialogue marke mudte hain aur fir dhoti ud jati hai. Quirky, unexpected and funny. But overall I felt he was wasted. Aakhir wo Uday Bhai hain, expectations toh hongi na.
Ending Fan Sequence
That whole fan sequence in the end was not funny. In a lot of comedy films, they mess up this part. Remember Hungama? Wo sabko current lagta hai aur chipak jate hain? That is one of the finest, chaotic end sequences in a comedy film where all the characters come together.
Everyone giving the gun back to the killer was still funny.
Nostalgia Bait
Aajkal har cheez mein nostalgia ghusaya ja raha hai kyuki naya toh accha ban nahi raha toh ye trick mil gayi hai sabko ki nostalgia ke naam pe public ko ullu banaya jaye. 60+ sequels are in the works currently. Itne sequels ek sath kabhi nahi bane they. Hollywood mein bhi yahi chal raha hai, as the system is messed up everywhere. Toh jaha ho sakta hai ye trick ghusai ja rahi hai.
Housefull 5 ki opening (murder ke baad) Papa Toh Band Bajaye aur O Girl You’re Mine gaana dala nostalgia bait ke liye. Chalo Aakhri Pasta, Jolly, Papa Ranjit aur unke Ayaeh, Teri Biwi Uski Gf, ye sab main plot points bhi le lu franchise ke naam pe. Fir bhi Monkey and Parrot scene from Housefull 1, Getting Bobby Deol from Housefull 4, Jagga Daku from Housefull 2, Hero and Khalnayak, all these were deliberately put into the script jisse puri film mein nostalgia bana rahe.
Housefull 5 is a decent watch, and I’m not dissing that. I’m just pointing out that everything has become about numbers, and algorithm, and templates. Organic creativity is dying and people need to call it out before it’s too late.
Why So Much Complaining?
Well, the studio and its PR is the reason. Initially, they boasted the budget to be around ₹350-375 crores for more than a year and only towards the release, very conveniently they said its ₹240 Cr. Pehle bhi toh bol sakte the. Baki PR articles toh aa hi rahe they toh budget bhi correct kar lete, why wait till the last minute? This happens all the time.
They boasted about the big cast, but a lot of them were underutilized. Badi cast, chote roles, less important characters toh pehle bhi hua karte the. Par aapne shor zyada machaya aur deliver kam kiya.
It is still the most expensive comedy film India has ever produced. Zarurat this? London ka car chase, wo monkey wala CGI scene, was all that necessary? Chahte toh paise bachaye ja sakte the. Inflated ticket prices is the reason for the complaining.
Hum apki tareef karne ke liye ready hain. Aap reason to do. Pehel aap khud hi apni tareef kar lete ho ki humne kitna mahaan kaam kiya hai. Fir aap ticket ke paise bhi badha dete ho. Fir uss level ka content bhi deliver bhi nahi karte. I have paid ₹800 for Imax 3D, for films where I wanted to have a great experience. But Housefull 5 was not worth ₹420 ticket, just because aapne mehengi film banai.
The film is most likely to have an average to semi-hit verdict. It needs ₹325cr ww gross get a hit tag. Not impossible, but difficult for sure. If Sitaare Zameen Par has a good opening weekend, then it will be difficult for Housefull 5 to make money in the third week. But if Sitaare Zameen Par fails, Housefull 5 will have a better chance in the third week till Maa hits theatres on 27 June 2025.
Missing Logic
I know maine khud upar kaha comedy film mein logic mat dhundo, par ye suno. Ye Housefull 5 ka hi khud ka logic hai. Asli Jolly ki wife foreigner thi, right? Toh Sonam Bajwa ne end mein Shaadi kaise karli Jolly se? Haina gadbad 😀

This is my personal opinion, feeling, and rating. You may have a different opinion and that’s fine. In every film, there are still some very funny scenes and some totally cringe ones. Aap apni ranking batao comments mein.
Final Verdict
Some people are hating on the film too much. mujhe aisa nahi laga. I had a fun time. Overall Housefull series hi koi bahuat acchi nahi hai, toh mujhe khas expectation thi bhi nahi. Except Housefull 2, which I feel was very funny. I would say agar trailer accha laga hai toh theatre mein dekh sakte hain. Rest, I strongly feel we need to make better films. Kab tak hum decent pe khush hote rahenge.
