Mother’s Day Special – The Warmth of CineMAA

Maa wala cinema – one of the most underrated genres for real!

MAA – one word billions of emotions. Ek shabd mai puri duniya sama jaati hai and Bollywood has seen some of the best movies which depict the heavenly love of mothers. Perhaps, one of the most iconic dialogue of Hindi Cinema is, “Mere Paas Maa Hai,” for a reason.

Here we are on the special occasion of Mother’s Day at OCD Times bringing to you some of the best mom centric movies of Indian cinema.

1. Taare Zameen Par (2007)

The warmth of a mother’s love for a child who is trying to fight his personal battles with the world has been beautifully portrayed in this Aamir Khan directorial. Tisca Chopra with her act as the mother struck the emotional chords of the masses. The song ‘Meri Maa’ is still widely used and popular among the audience. We all felt the helplessness of Tisca Chopra as the mother when Ishan said, “Mom I know I am trying….see ABCDLMNOXYZ.”

2. Mom (2017)

The comeback movie of Sridevi after English Vinglish where she portrayed the role of a fierce mom who can do to seek revenge for her daughter. Sridevi shined throughout the running moments of the movie and it depicted the raw emotions of every mother. ‘Mom’ powerfully conveyed what lengths a mother could go for her children, even if they don’t put much effort towards loving their mother. The movie stands tall on it’s dialogue- “Bhagwaan har jagah nahi hota hai, issi liye toh usne maa banai hai”.

3. Mimi (2021) [Mother’s Day]

Not exactly a movie centered around mothers, but the end 30 minutes of Mimi beautifully depicts the love of a mother even if the child doesn’t completely belong to her. The end scene of Mimi where Kriti Sanon decided to let go of the child for his betterment, tells a lot about a mother’s love and what she can do just for her child. The Art of Letting Go, truly is the most beautiful form of love!

4. English Vinglish (2012)

Another Sridevi movie on the list, this time showing the sweet and caring side of a mother. Contrary to the fierce depiction of love and revenge seeking story of ‘Mom’, English Vinglish shows a rather humble side of a mother, who tries her best to improve her english to satisfy her children. “Agar mai mere subject main hi fail ho gayi, toh dusre subjects mai pass hone ka kya faayda?” is a dialogue that conveys the message that the only validation a mother needs is from her children.

5. Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway (2023)

Another comeback movie, this time for Rani Mukerji where she plays the role of a mother residing in Norway where the system wrongfully takes her children away. The helpless nature of a caring mom was brilliantly performed by Rani. “Am I a good mother, am I a bad mother? I don’t know.. but I am a mother sir,” part of the climax of the movie which shows the power that the word ‘mother’ holds.

6.Secret Superstar (2017)

Another movie from the house of Aamir Khan Productions after Taare Zameen Par, starring Zaira Wasim sadly in her final appearance as an actor who has to keep her identity hidden in an attempt to make it big in the music industry. The movie showcases the support system that a mother is and she can fight against anyone for her daughter. Meher Vij shined with her performance as an extremely wholesome portrayal of the mother.
