Teaser Overview
The Thamma trailer is strictly average. But I feel that is because they are hiding the core plot. Still, an average trailer should not be the case. Hype karke ka time tha, soch mein dal diya audience ko ki chalegi ya nahi chalegi.
The Cut
Despite the length of 2:54 minutes, the trailer does not depend on a linear format of progression, jaha film ki starting hi trailer ki bhi starting hoti hai aur film ka climax, trailer ke end mein hota hai, sab sequence mein chalta hai, aur hume puri film ke saare plot points bata dete hain.
While I appreciate this aspect of the Thamma trailer, I still feel the overall cut itself was not very engaging. It did not feel like a big trailer of a big film of a big universe.
Plot We Know
75 saal purana Betaal ka legend and sequence hoga, with Nawaz breaking the rules and then the others imprison him.
Then, a forest sequence in the present time , where Ayushmann Khurrana will be mauled by a bear, and then Rashmika Mandanna saves him. To save his life, maybe she turns him into a vampire, then they fall in love.
There are city sequences, Ayushmann discovering his powers, some songs, final fight and Bhediya vs Vampire. Apart from this, plot wise hume nahi pata kya kya hone wala hai.
Plot We Don’t Know
Based on the previous movies of MHCU, I have a feeling that Amar Kaushik, Niren Bhatt and Aditya Sarpotdar ne simple story toh nahi sochi hogi. Itna bharosa hai ki kuch deeper level pe zarur hoga kahani mein, betaal ke legend ki story telling mein. Aur mujhe lagta hai inhone wo sab nahi bataya hai trailer mein. Aur usi wajah se trailer average lag raha hai.
Plot points we don’t know –
- Why did Rashimika turn Ayushmann into a Vampire?
- How did she turn him?
- Why does she say she can’t be with Alok?
- What’s Nawaz’s true goal?
- Who captured him 75 years ago?
- Who throws Ayushmann in the city when Rashmika catches him?
- Why do Alok and Bhediya fight?
- How did Bhediya get an upgrade?
Also, I feel at this point they will also hint or mention something that will expand the universe in terms of storytelling, and not just crossovers of characters. I think they will will mention something is going on, some serious power rising, hinting at the Thanos of this Universe, or something small that leads to the future stories of Shakti Shalini and Chamunda.
I’m not sure if this will happen or not, but I have a feeling that the makers will do something more this time.
Comedy
Theek lag raha hai. Stree 2 trailer mein bhi kuch bahaut funny nahi samajh aa raha tha par film kya super funny thi. The situation and characters may feel more funny in the film.
They were saying this time it is not horror-comedy but a love story. But nahi yar, mujhe toh horror-comedy hi lag rahi hai fully. Maybe horror na ho, comedy toh hai. Ab kitni funny hai wo dekhte hain.
I liked the Rajma Chawal joke, Samay Raina ka “Crazy ho Gaya Ye Toh,” Singham 8 bar dekhi hai. Ye sab waise hi muhfat dialogues hain jo MHCU ke characters ke muh se randomly nikalte rehte hain.
Nawaz ka hi sabse zyada darr hai, ki as villain wo strong hai ya nahi? Comedy ke chakkar mein gadbad na kar de. Teaser ka wo “75 saal se romance nahi dekha” dialogue best tha uska ab tak ka.
Kaisa Baap Hai
Ye kaisa baap hai jo apne bete ko pasand hi nahi karta 😂 I’m saying in a funny way only. Police ke pas ja ke shikayat kar raha hai, biwi se bhi shikayat kar raha hai. Bahu ka pata chalega toh heart attack hi aa jayega.
Power Discovery
Har superhero type film mein jab hero ko power milti hai toh ek time ata hai jab wo apni powers discover karta hai, ki wo kya kya kar sakta hai, aur uska ek pura sequence hota hai. Jaise Spiderman yaad karo, Superman, aur Bhediya mein Bhaskar. Waise hi ek sequence Ayushmann Khurrana ka hoga Thamma mein.
Music
So Nora is back after the Kamariya song in Stree. We have 3 dance numbers in total, one with Nora Fatehi, second with Malaika Arora and one with Rashmika Mandanna.
But the best song is Rahe Na Rahe, jo title announcement ke time aya tha.
And BGM wise jo teaser mein tha na, wo kaafi mast hai. Theatre mein jab teaser dekhe 2-3 bar toh bahaut sahi feel ati hai. Trailer mein aisa kuch bhi outstanding music nahi laga. Sound design pe bhi kaam nahi kiya hai.
Bhediya Upgrade
Humesha se main chahta tha ki human form ka werewolf ho. Mujhe humesha Van Helsing ka yaad ata hai, bachpan mein dekha tha Hugh Jackman turning into a Werewolf, dimag ein chhap gaya tha.
But Bhediya mein animal form ka werewolf dikhaya tha, tab samajh mein aya ki Vfx limitations ki wajah se kiya hoga. Animal ke upar layer by layer sab design karna easy hota. Lekin ab Stree 2 aur Chhaava se paise aa gaye na, ab bhi upgrade nahi karte toh galat hota. Dekha dosto, wo jo intention ki baat kehta hu main. Producers ka intent hona chahiye accha kaam karne ka.
Aise upgrades MCU mein ate the. Hum teaser and trailer ke breakdown karte the. Actually puri duniya hi karti thi and sab videos banate the aur dekhte the, easter eggs, breakdowns. Aise banate hain universe. Wo feeling yaad aa gayi.
Director’s Universe
Aditya Sarpotdar is the director of Thamma, who was also the director of Munjya. He brings back the character of Sathyaraj from Munjya into Thama. I liked that scene in the trailer. But I never really liked that character much, even in Munjya. He was a joker, which is not the problem. I wanted that, despite being a Joker, he would be some kind of genius. With some hidden talent. But he was not shown like that. His advice worked by fluke. I want to see better characters. Hope he also gets an upgrade in Thamma.
The MHCU Logo
Over the years, I’ve given many names – Muchchad, Gunga, Mirchi Seth, Kesariya, MHCU and a few others. My old audience knows all these. But only one stuck with the officials – MHCU (obviously, kyuki baki sab koi kyu karega 😂).
People used to take other names like Horror Comedu Universe (HCU), Maddock’s Supernatural Universe (MSU), and it was only I, who was using MHCU much before that. The idea came to me as I wanted to match it with MCU, the first Cinematic Universe that started all of this.
Maddock only revealed this name with their slate poster, but I had been using it in my posts since always, people used to ask ye kya hai kyu hai, and only my audience replied to them in the comments. Finally, wo name official ho gaya, finally ab uska logo bhi aa gaya. I feel happy, even though there will never be any credit.
What To Expect
I have high expectations from the film. I agree that the trailer is strictly average, and it may affect the buzz before release. Thus, marketing needs to be very strong now.
The release date is also weird; it should have been a Friday, 17 October, but they chose a Tuesday, 21 October. This may affect the opening, but word of mouth may pull through if the film is good. Ultimately sab yahi aa jata hai na, acchi marketing aur acchi film? Basics kabhi change nahi hote bhai, kitna bhi try karlo.
I’m not keeping my hopes very high. Abhi August mein hi jo dil toota hai uske sadme se bahar nahi nikla hu. But being a filmy buff, being a fantasy-fiction lover, kuch hopes toh rahengi. Akela universe bacha India ka jisko actually “Universe” keh sakte hain at this point. So unless they prove otherwise, I have hope.
