“Ab hone De Nain Matakka, Jee Bhar Ke Nain Matakka”
Nain Matakka video song from Baby John is out now, featuring Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh and Diljit Dosanjh. While music composer Thaman S also makes an appearance in the song, female vocalist Dheekshitha Venkadeshan, aka Dhee was not part of the video.
Review
If I don’t go into details, it is a decent song which will look good on the big screen. But for those who have not seen it yet. Pura song dikha dete hain toh same impact nahi reh jata. But still it works. Decent vocals, decent video, nothing too bad for the layman.
Moving forward is a detailed discussion for the cinephiles and for those who wish to discuss and understand on a deeper level. So read if this interests you.

Composition and Lyrics
I really miss the old songs where compositions were not so flat. If I give examples, fanboys will associate with the actor and turn it into fanwar and abuses, and the point will be forgotten. But you can imagine the songs sung by Sonu Nigam, Shaan and others, where we used to grove both on the music and the verses. From start to end it used to be a journey through the song, whether it was a romantic song, party song or a cool dance number.
The lyrics too used to be poetic and meaningful. Now we just have rhyming words and catchphrases. Please note that I’m talking more about the process in general and not just this song. My point may apply only 50% on this song and maybe a hundred percent in another song. But I want the readers to understand the point more than making it about this particular song.

Overuse of Diljit Dosanjh
I had said this when the news came out that Diljit Dosanjh will be singing a track for Baby John. Because he is famous, corporates are just using him as a tool to get views. They don’t really care about the art or music, and you can feel this in the tracks. First he was used in Kalki 2898AD, a forcefull punjabi track in dystopian era. Then a song in Jigra just to get the nostalgia vibe of Ikk Kudi from Udta Punjab. Next it was in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 which majority agree to be a trash song. And now Nain Matakka in Baby John.
Diljit is a darling. He would not say No to producers. Plus he gets paid. But how the makers are using him is my concern. He is just there for the face value and brand, not for singing. Just listen to the songs mention above with closed eyes and you will feel that it would not have made much difference if it was another singer. Compare these with Diljit’s original Punjabi tracks. You will realise what I’m talking about.
Another way to notice how it is a PR move is by looking at the captions and articles. They are using the term “global sensations Diljit Dosanjh” everywhere. Nothing wrong in that. I’m not against PR or any such strategies. The only complain is putting more efforts in these things rather than art and artists. I did not like the voice of Dhee, too shrill for me. But that’s a personal opinion.

Varun The Dancer vs Keerthy
I’ve always loved Varun’s dance. He is graceful and charming. But today I felt that he is great in doing modern style of dance but not in the desi style. You know na wo Govinda and south was desi style? Yeah, Varun was not that good here. Keerthy Suresh on the other hand was nailing it. Both her dance and expressions were top notch, way better than Varun. This is just my observation for this, not making a comment on anyone.

South Style In North
Pan-India is nice. Sharing of culture is nice. Getting inspired from the west is also nice. But what’s not nice is rushing after popular stuff and losing identity. South has a different culture, a different flavour. North has a different culture and flavour. While Atlee in Jawab and Sandeep Reddy Vanga in Animal were able to pull this off impeccably, I’m not very much convinced how few songs in Bollywood are made in south style, both in terms of music and dance, where they are not able to justice to both.
For me one of those songs were Zinda Banda in Jawan. Neither the song represented how north/bollywood does it, not Srk was able to do it like Vijay. Anirudh did good, Srk did good. But to me it felt more like a khichdi. I remember getting abused then, and I might get abuses now. In the name of hype, fueled by fanboys and PR, its very difficult to express a polarised view or start a discussion.
While I felt Keerthy Suresh was too good in Nain Matakka, Varun was not upto the mark, even though he is a great dancer.

Shooting Style
Club treatment is one of the things I don’t like, as it is very low effort attempt and every song looks the same more or less. Here is was not the case fully. Much of the song was on artificial sets which looked good no doubt, but that is still not cutting it for me. Try to understand, when you have seen literally thousands of songs, you need something different to be stimulated. Really missing those songs choreographed by Farah Khan. Currently, Main Hoon Na songs are coming to mind. Just check them out after reading this and try to feel what all I have explained.

I would really like to hear your opinions on this. Hope for a mature and thoughtful discussion in the comments. We are the most active on our instagram page. There will be a post for this review where you can comment. Or any other place is also fine.

I think you gave biased review… In simple words you can directly say I don’t like the song rather than writing an essay on it ..
No hate just giving my opinion as you gave 💗
That’s the problem na. Everyone just gives opinions these days and it leads to fanwars. Things are bad because we don’t chase detailing anymore. Makers and audience both have to realize this.
