Cocktail 2 Trailer Overview
Is the Cocktail 2 trailer good or bad? Well, I did not feel much. Looks more like.. let’s get on this one point at a time.
Nostalgia Bait
It has become a template, isn’t it? Ek purani hit film ka forced sequel bana do. Log random story ko nostalgiake naam pe dekhne aa jayenge. 1-2 remake gaane dal denge. Music platforms ka algorithm bhi unko pick kar lega aur waha se bhi paise kama lenge. Acchi film? Wo kisko banani hai. Non-theatrical se paise recover ho hi jate hain. Why should be bother? Pattern ban gaya hai, and the studios are not even shying away from this anymore. Jab public ko fark hi nahi pad raha hai aur paise aa rahe hain toh parwah kisko hai?
Too harsh?
Saif Vs Shahid
In the original Cocktail, Saif Ali Khan was a goofy character with an effortless charm. Well, Shahid is not fitting that bill entirely. Though I love his performances even in bad films, here it’s not that great. Maybe in the film when we see him in proper scenes he would be fitting well, coz trailer mein bas kuch random shots dikhaye hain, wo utne natural nahi lage. He is good in serious characters, but comedy is a hit or a miss for him, like many of his earlier films.
And I’m bound to compare it with Saif’s character coz it’s a sequel. Forced sequel actually. They could have gone with a fresh title, but fir film bechna mushkil ho jata na. That’s all there is now. Sell the product. Art? Wo kya hota hai?
Writing
Many of the dialogues seem forced and not natural. Maybe because it is written by Luv Ranjan?
Cocktail 1 was written by Imtiaz Ali. That was a beautiful movie, layered and fun, despite the young party loving, carefree, youngsters.
The dialogues here give you a feel of the Luv Ranjan style of movies (Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Pyaar Ka Panchnama, etc, but those work well when he directs them. Here, with Homi Adjania, they dont suit too well.
Maybe because the trailer was not cut well? High chance that these scenes and dialogues are good but the absurd flow of the trailer ruined it for us.
Trailer Cut
They tried hard to hide the plot, which is good, but in that persuit, they sacrificed the essence of the trailer. It is a very absurd cut, which obviously gives you a feel of the film, generates curiosity, especially after that rumour of Kriti-Rashmika relationship angle, but the trailer in itself feels very incomplete.
Upar se 3 min ka bana diya jiski koi zarurat nahi thi. Kaunsi kitab mein likha hai trailer itna lamba hona chahiye? Ya toh puri film dikha dete hain ya time fill karne ke liye random shots bhar dete hain.
Kriti Sanon – The Sole Strong Point
Have yu noticed this? The only thing anyone is talking about is How HOT Kriti Sanon is in the film. Pehle same sex relationship ki baat bhi ho rahi thi lekin ab toh bas yahi baat bach gayi hai.
Marketing ke naam pe toh ajkal kuch nahi hota. Maine bhi bolna chhod hi diya hai. My old audience knows how much I loved movie marketing. Lekin ab toh sab gimmicks pe aa gaye hain. Kabhi kuch nahi hota. Wahi template stuff on repeat.
Cocktail 2 mein sabse bada example lelo iss cheez ka. Koi graphic designer hi nahi rakha hai. Kisi intern se Canva pe banwa rahe hain saare posters. Posters bhi kya, bas stills hain film ke. Unhi pe bas text likh diya hai, nothing else. Canva wale artiists bhi ajkal effort dal dete hain yaha wo bhi nahi hai. Wo paisa chala gaya PR pe. Abhi news mein aya hai ₹20 Cr on marketing and promotion. Kaha lag raha hai ₹20Cr ? Abhi city tours mein udaoge?
The Music
Good hai. Best nahi. Waise aaj ke time mein best kaha hi expect kar sakte kisi se. 50 mein se koi 1 accha nikal jata hai bas. Cocktail 2 songs are not bad, that’s the only good thing. But they are not something that will remain in the playlist for long. Jab Talak is so genz algorithm song. I too hear it in the gym and car sometimes but ye phase hai, kuch time mein gayab ho jayega like so many other recent songs.
Tujhko is the best song for me, because it reminds me of how Bollywood songs used to be. It has melody, lyrics, meaning, emotions, everything. Mashooka is also average. Abhi chalega, lamba nahi chalega. Tum Hi Ho Bandhu remake obvious hai.
Lekin dekh rahe ho? Remake pe jana hi pada. Uss level ka gaana hai hi nahi new album mein. Purana yaad karo.. Dari Desi, Tum Hi Ho Bandhu, Tera Naam Japdi Phiran, Main Sharabi, Angreji Beat. Yaad karo ye sab kitne time tak humari playlists mein the. Aaj bhi wo nostalgia playlists, long drives, intercity roadtrips, clubs mein Bollywood Nights mein, ye gaane bajte hain. You think 2 years down the line Cocktail 2 ke gaane wo vibe hold kar payenge?
Still, Cocktail 2 songs are way way better than what we are getting. I’m only mad because of the title gimmick they did here. Aap naya title nahi le sakte kyuki darr lagta hai new film sell karne mein. Art pe bharosa nahi, khud ki marketing skills pe bharosa nahi, lekin agents and agencies ke gimmicks pe bharosa hai.
Plot Prediction
Lesbian relation hai ya nahi ye trailer se thoda confusion ho gaya hai.
But lets try to breakit down as per the trailer. So Shahid is dating Rashmika. He meets Kriti and they flirt and maybe he gets attracted to her as well. Or maybe not. They don’t ever go that far.
Later it turns out that Rashmika and Kriti love each other, that is why they both are seen as the brides and Shahid is sad.
Confusion also arises because in one of the shots it feels like Shahid and Rashmika are in a Haldi ceremony.
This confusion, curiosity is nice, maybe it will work in their favour.
Final Thoughts
I think thoda zyada harsh ho gaya main iss review mein. Pichle kuch mahino ki filmo ka frustration sab ispe nikal gaya.
Dhurandhar 2 ke baad se kuch khas films nahi ayi hain. Sab average ya below average hi hai. Logon ke pass kuch dekhne ko nahi hai lambe time se. So maybe Cocktail 2 ko iska fayda mil jaye.
Also Homi Adajania is a good director. So another reason it may work. Waise box office pe chalna and as a cinema enjoy karna do alag baatein hain. As an audience, I want good cinema. Mujhe kya karna kitna kamayi, kitna nuksan ki. Mujhe thodi kuch milna hai :p
