“Deva aplaya marji cha maalik“
The Intent
Very less it happens that you see a trailer selling a film and the character, not the star. Mostly we only witness the template based flow, long duration, too much plot, and important dialogue or action to entice the fans rather than saving it for the theatre. Deva is none of that and trailer cut is exactly how it should be.
Trailer Cut
I was happy as soon as I saw the duration – 2:18 minutes. The trailer opens with B-roll shots and a voice over. A very good way to bring the audience into the world. The trailer is cut on the beats of a serious music along with the musical part of Bhasad Macha. They have also made use of the sound effects, which works every time if done well. The trailer opens and ends on low points with all the Bhasad in the middle. This is not seen in most trailer coz they follow the same template.
I like that they focused more on the character of Deva rather than telling us look how cool Shahid is. Yes, you can do that with the same footage, by the way you edit the trailer. An actor or star will always be there, we know that it is Shahid, but we are more interested in seeing what Shahid does as Deva, rather than just seeing the actor on screen.
Plot Reveal
We know a cop is killed which makes Deva go nuts. He is out to find the killer and he is not holding back, so much so that he is not even following the protocols of the system. In every scene it looks like he is out for blood. A rage which reminds us of Kabir Singh, only much more and brutal, and we are sold.
The end of the trailer tells us that there is something that makes Shahid fearful. There is a trauma, we don’t know what and hence a dual behaviour. We see Kubbra Sait and Pavail Gulatie in very limited capacity so we don’t know much about them, which is a nice thing. Pravessh Rana is a friend of Deva but not too much has been shown either.
It was not revealed in the trailer but then Pooja Hegde told everything during the trailer launch today, – Her character’s name is Diya, she is a journalist, the article Police Ya Mafia was written by her. Kya zarurat thi bhai bolne ki.
But I like that I do not know much about the plot from the promos and I have not seen Mumbai Police, so theatre mein toh maza ane wala hai.
Final Thoughts
I’ve liked the promos and assets til now and they are all quite solid. I just hope they do not get desperate from here and start revealing too much from promos.
Music is good too but I’m not gonna watch or review any songs, did not watch Bhasad as well, so that I can watch them fresh on screen.
People are discussing if the film will be blockbuster or will be bomb due to the remake factor. Nobody is discussing if they will have a good time at the theatres or not. I’m excited and I will watch it o Day 1 for sure. Rest, I don’t care about collections and I believe audience should stop caring too. We should come back to discussing and loving cinema, more than collections and tags.
