What does the CBFC do?
In CBFC, there is an Examining committee (EC) that watches the content of the film and decides the rating i.e. U, A or U/A.
In some cases, when either the EC and the chairman are confused about the rating or when the filmmakers are not happy with the rating given by the EC, they approach the Reviewing Committee (RC).
The Adipurush debacle
Last month, the CBFC was heavily flagged for passing Adipurush with ‘Zero Cuts’ and a ‘U’ certificate. Questions were raised about how the CBFC, which is quick to censor content that they deem objectionable, passed Adipurush without any deletions.
Now, the CBFC wants to be extra careful and redeem itself as ‘OMG 2’ also covers some religious aspects in the storyline. So, the EC has currently passed its duty to RC to review the film.
What is true and what’s not?
Recently, several false reports have been circulating saying that the CBFC has denied giving any certificate to the film and it might lead to a ban on the film, none of which is true.
The truth is that the film is currently undergoing the certification process and is taking more time than normal. The CBFC does not want to make any mistakes this time.
What now?
It is already July 16th and the CBFC has not given any certification. Now as per the rules, if the makers are not satisfied with the CBFC’s decision, they will have to challenge them in court. This is a time taking process and it may delay the release of the film.
Due to this, most filmmakers normally succumb to whatever the CBFC demands, so that the film releases on time. As of now, the film is looking to safely release on 11th August 2023, clashing with Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2’.
