Song Overview
I had loved Zohra Jabeen a lot and praised it for various reasons. You can read that review here.
But his song is not that good. And I have reasons, let’s discuss.
Music, Lyrics and Vocals
The music and composition by Pritam is definitely nice. It has the vibe that grows on you. It’s the lyrics that I don’t like. Last time I said the lyrics had poetry, well this time it seems like more or rhyming words have been used rather than a lyrics that has some sense.
Bam Bam Bam Bole Shambhu, Uda Bheje Ka Tambu. Kahin Na Gir Jaaun,Sambhalo Mujhay Bandhoo.
“Piya Jo Tera Pyala, Hua Main Matwala, Asar Hua Aisa Ke, Chota Dikhe Lambu.”
It’s fine because its gonna be a celebratory song, but it’s not great or something to appreciate, that’s all I’m saying.
Vocals are nice, they go with the composition of the song very much. I’m not a fan of rap in Hindi songs, very less it feel well but here it feels forced. And maybe I know why. Sikandar is living with the common people and in the story they must be showing kids who play on the streets, rap, dance and do stuff like that. That Dharavi kind of crowd who are into desi hip-hop. The rap part is done by Bombay Lokal, The Dharavi Dream Project, so I think it fits with the narrative of the story, but as a song I don’t like it. It’s a personal preference, if you like it’s fine, please don’t get mad.
Picturization
Again, the scale looks big as per the kind of film this is. Visually it is very happy, cheerful, colourful like how a Holi song should be. I can feel this song will be quite enjoyable in theatres but I’m not sure if this will become a great Holi song for the music playlists that gets played every year on Holi even after decades.
Everyone saw Kajal Aggarwal, but did you notice Sharman Joshi and Jatin Sarna? The way Kajal and her family are behaving, it is clear that there is a story going on parallelly and I’m glad I don’t know about it.
They makers have again not shown the whole song, which I’m definitely digging. Don’t wanna watch a lot of footage before stepping into the theatre. This is enough for marketing.
Costumes and the Stars
Did you notice a stark difference in the costumes of the leads and background dancers? In the last song Zohra Jabeen, the stars were in black while the background dancers were in different colours. And because of all the lights, designs, props and things happening within the frame, the stars were not very different from the crew.
But here if you notice, Salman Khan is in red, Rashmika Madanna is in white and they are the only ones who have no Gulaal (Holi colours) on them, while all the background dancers are wearing jeans with white shirt and white kurta with holi colours on them. This makes the leads stand out.
I just wish to point out the difference in both the songs. It’s not that one is better than the other, I’m only saying these are the creative choices an artist makes and these choices give a certain result. One is celebrating Eid and has a different vibe while the other is celebrating Holi and gives another vibe. This is much richer in every aspect as oppose to the “Club Treatment” I crib about where every song feels almost the same.
Possible Spoiler
I think Rashmika Mandanna is dead. She is here like how Aishwarya Rai was there with Srk in Mohabbatein. It’s not just the white dress. In the first frame Sikandar has tears in his eyes. Notice how Rashmika appears, touches him and looks at him from behind. then there is a flash of light and cut to Sikandar dancing. Maybe Kajal and family knows that he is sad yet he is dancing coz it’s Holi and he should be happy for others.
Maybe I’m thinking too much. Ab kya karu hoon toh filmy hi na. But what if it’s true? Ab ye comment mat karna, “Murugadoss wants to know your location.”
Bhai Ka Dance
So the last time I felt Salman Khan was not able to dance well. Well this time this is not the case. They have given him steps which he is able to perform well. Not saying the dance itself is too great, its rather simple with very basic movements which even a non-dancer can perform with a little practice. But it all looks good on screen.
Rashmika is very decent. In both the songs she does not have much to do. I don’t know if there are female vocals in the songs or not. But it feels like she is just there for the sake of it, like how female leads are not given much to do in most Indian movies.
Can’t deny the fact that Bhaijaan comes with an aura everytime he is on screen. It is just that some directors are not able to picturize it well and then it looks cringe, like in Race 3, Radhe or Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. In Bam Bam Bole he looks like the Sikandar everyone loves (in the film). I can imagine people dancing in theatres during both the songs.
Title Design
Just like the did it in Zohra Jabeen, they have done it this time too. A different title design for the song, which they have applied to the title of the movie too. Small thing but shows some effort from the makers.
Final Thoughts
Bam Bam Bole is overall a decent song, which will work well with the storyline in theatres. It will definitely excite the fans, but it is not something that will excite the neutrals a lot. It is not something they that will be memorable or remain in the playlists. It will be played this year for sure, but it’s not a breakthrough song. Well, every song can’t be. Its just that when it comes to big stars and big films, then expectations also rise.
