“Maut, Mera Usse Ek Purana Rishta Hai “

This Awarapan 2 review will be full of spoilers. If you just want the verdict, ki theatre mein dekhi ya nahi, toh skip to the last paragraph, and come back to this review after watching. Kyuki, “Tera Mera Rishta Purana.”
Forced Sequel
There are two kinds of forced sequels being made today. One is where they just use the franchise name and tell a completely new story. Maybe the character names will be the same and sometimes not even that. Bas title aur purani film ke 2-3 remake songs kyuki, algorithm wo bhi pick karta hai aur music rights ke paise milte hain. Easy money, cinema se kya lena dena.
Second kind of forced sequel is a continuation of the same story and characters, but not because the writer or director was itching to tell a story. They are made only because it’s in the trend. So the goal is to make money, not create art. Awarapan 2 falls in this second category. The story of Shivam continues, but only to sell a film, not as an evolution of the character.
Why Forced Sequel?
Because it is working. Makers ke pov se dekho toh its easy money. Mehnat nahi karni, nostagia ke naam pe audience bhi aa jati hai, Youtube aur Google pe already indexing ho chuki hai, algotithm trigger ho jata hai, non-theatricla rights bik jate hain aur jo theatre ka risk hai wo fans pura kar dete hain.
Actor ke fans toh ate hi hain, plus neutral audience bhi nostalgia bait pe khushi khushi aa jati hai. Usne se kaafi log baat mein complain karte hain, lekin dekhne zarur jate hain. Bas makers ka kaam ho jata hai, and this is a formula now, which is not going to end soon.
Screenplay
The screenplay is a drag. Starts decently, sets up very well, Shivam gets in the gang, and that’s it. Next comes a bore-fest till the climax fight, and just to keep you hooked, the theme of Toh Phir Aao, Tera Mera Rishta, or Ve Junoon plays on repeat. To remind you ki “bore mat ho yar, Awarapan ki feel le bro!”
Sirf gaane hi nahi, beech beech mein Awaparan 1 se scenes bhi dikhate hain in flashbacks. Which suits to the story well, and I understand the reason for it. The reason for those scenes is on point. But when the overall film seems like a drag, then you start feeling ki ye scene dalna story ka part tha ya nostalgia maintain rakhne wala gimmick?
Awarapan 2 would have worked well if it had come 2-3 year after the first part. But 19 years later, we should have upgraded the storytelling.
Writing
When you start writing yourself, when you create something out of a white sheet of paper/document, when you try to create a world, characters, situations, you start understanding the writing even more. You notice and appreciate where effort has been put in and you also notice which of the things were not good at all.
The writing of Awarapan 2 was not bad. In fact, it was better than 95% of the forced sequel being made post-pandemic. The problem is the screenplay and direction, which reflect more use of clichés and gimmicks instead of true storytelling. I’ll discuss more of these in the next sections under separate headings.
Emraan Hashmi
Quite underutilized. We see Shivam coming back, we see some obvious action scenes, but there is no character arc. If you remember the first part, Shivam goes through a lot of ups and downs. He is seen as a lover boy, then he goes crazy afterwards. Remember the grave-digging scene? Super intense.
Afterwards, he starts feeling the human side for the girl under Malik. He has a friend; he has his boss, and he is in a dilemma. Even while betraying he is not fully sure if he wants to kill his boss. There is a lot of emotional turmoil in him. This is the thing that made Awarapan a cult (along with the songs), because crime drama toh bahaut saare hain.
In Awarapan 2, we don’t really see much. Yes, there were a few good things and that’s why I praise the writing but Emraan’s character could have been a lot better.
Disha Patani
The most irritating character. Pure film mein bas roti rehti hai. Depressed soul. This is the not-so-good gimmick part I was talking about. Heroine leni thi le li. But she is not driving the story much. Actually wo pura siblings wala arc slow down kar deta hai story ko. I understand what the writer tried to do there. Here are various small connections and callbacks which I appreciate. But somehow it all feels quite hollow. In a world of crime, in a gang war among drug lords, this was a very dull subplot. Fir wahi forced gaane and all, again dragging the screenplay down.
Puran Gabbi
The star of the show!!! Very well-written character and brilliantly acted. He makes every single scene worth watching. Maybe the only good point during the dull screenplay in the middle. The only problem is, there weren’t enough supporting characters or situations to counter him. Waha thoda conflict hota toh aur maza ata.
Underutilized Actors
You got Suvinder Vicky (Brigadier Jahangir from Dhurandhar 2) and Vijayant Kohli (Mama from Sapne Vs Everyone), and you didn’t give them good enough roles? Neigher screentime wise nor meaty role-wise.
I liked the cigarette-sharing part, I liked how one was killed, and the other was emotional about it, enough to betray his boss (appreciating the good parts of writing), but still they were quite underutilized and felt like fillers.
Could have added more layers to it. Crime and gangster movies have that scope. Wo siblings wala pura arc hata ke gangster arc badha dete and Shivam ko show karte kaise ek ek karke pura gang khatam kiya, while making each kill a genius move, toh aur maza ata.
Shabana Azmi
Another underutilized character. Na power ka sahi se samajh aya, and koi villainous roop dekh unka. Bas 4-5 dialogue marne ke liye rakha bas. One of the clichés of movies these days.
Logic Error
Dekho bahaut zyada nahi but kuch toh basic logic insaan notice kar hi leta hai. Jaise baap ke cremation mein beti full makeup laga ke ayi hai 😜
Why was that street fight scene necessary? Kaun Interpol ka officer bolega ki, “Shivam, aise khudko dard dena band karo,” and then Shivam says, “Mera dard se purana rishta hai.” Then he fights and peeche gaana bajta hai. Yaar 2026 hai, band karo ye sab.
The only time Shivam applies any tactical genius is when he planned to get recruited into Zarawar’s gang. Apart from that, what was his plan exactly? Yahi wo part hai jisko drag bol raha tha main. His first test job jaha taxi leke jata hai. Zabardasti ka scene ki kabr mein gaadh diya aur hero ki tarah nikal ke sabko peet diya. Itna bada gang bina guns ke aur bhaisaab sabko maar ke, ek ka sar kaat ke le aaye.
Mast plan bana ke gang mein ghus gaya, aage bhi wo sab dikhana tha. Most of the time he is just lucky, or surviving on a cheat code of unlimited lives, not someone who is a genius at planning and execution. Bar bar BGM baja dene se thodi hota hai yar.
Not Logic But Magic
Dekho main bhi cinema lover hu and kabhi kabhi thodi cinematic liberty samajhta hu, to give the audience that feeling of heroism and cinema. But that has to be balanced. One should know what to how, how much to show, and how not to bet overboard.
One of those scenes that work well in Awarapan 2 is when the Buddhist monks come in at the right time to save him. As if God was with him and helping him. With the BGM of Tera Mera Rishta, of course. So one scene which really fills you up with emotion, balancing well with the storyline and nostalgia, is acceptable. I think everyone loved this scene.
Plot Twists
Jaise hi Emraan ne bacchi ko anath-ashram mein diya, aur second time visit kiya, samajh aa gaya tha ki ye kidnap hogi aur human trafficking ke chakkar mein Shivam uss duniya mein wapas jayega. You don’t have to be too intelligent for this, agar mere jaise bahuat movies dekhoge toh tum bhi guess karne lag jaoge.
Disha Patani working with Shabana Azmi, I didn’t see that coming. But wo kuch bahaut khas bhi nahi tha, na uss twist ka aage plot mein kuch hua.
Wo Aaliya ke sath wali bacchi beemar thi. Wahi samajh aa gaya tha ki Taweez degi usko protection ke liye, wo marr jayegi aur Shivam ko lagega ki Aaliya marr gayi. Dekha hua hai pehle bhi. Kaha, pata nahi, par dekha hua hai.
Baaki toh kuch khas nahi tha. Interpol wala marta hi, kaafi cliched subplot hai.
Haan, wo ambulance wala accha tha. Best tha, I would say. “I didn’t know if you would understand, so I kept saying Ambulance Ambulance.” Hilarious!
Cameos
Shriya Saran cameo was good.
Shaad Randhawa was there for 2 seconds. I liked the how it was shown, but wo overall scene faltu tha.. itne drugs le liye, behosh ho gaya. Why was it necessary? Just coz Disha Patani usko tub ein dal sake? Waise itne bhari admi ko ghaseet ke leke kaise gayi andar?
I’m sure if Atul Parchure would not have passed away, unka bhi ek cameo hota.
Music
Kuch khas maza nahi aya. Logon ne pehle hi bol diya tha gaane mazedar nahi hain, toh main kuch naya nahi bol raha. New ones didn’t have the same impact and remakes of old ones were missing the soul. Haan wo Tera Mera Rishta thoda rock style mein compose kiya hai, toh last mein fight ke time pe accha lagta hai.
Wahi ho raha hai ajkal. At max, songs are good enough for the scene, but not enough that they remain in your playlist, or make you listen to it after years. Basically, forgettable. Music rights bech diye, paise aa gaye, ho gaya.
Bewakoofi
Dekho ye review ka part nahi hai ye bas aise hi fan observation hai. Shivam jaha jata hai, apne boss ko maar deta hai. Dono films mein yahi hua. Shabana Azmi ko lena hi nahi chahiye tha usko. Maregi wo bhi 😂
Verdict
Dekhna hai dekh aao, main ye nahi kahunga ki OTT ka wait karlo. But depends on your time, money, and how much you liked Awarapan ka first part. Despite all the flaws, the movie is not unwatchable, but don’t expect too much either.

Aur haan.. end mein Awarapan 3 ka hint de diya, kyuki yahi chal raha hai ajkal.
