Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 – Title Track Review

“Hey Hari Ram, Krishna Jagannatham, Prema Nandi, Ye Kya Bana Diya!”

Don’t from where to start. Everything.. EVERYTHING that I have complained since forever has gone wrong in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 title track, both in terms of audio and video. Let’s go step by step.

Mashup of 3 different songs

The core vibe of the song has gone. I did not like the song in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 as well as it distorted the original one, but it was still fine as most of the essence of the original was still there. But here it feels like three different songs have been merged by a DJ. Pitbull is singing god knows what, Diljit Dosanjh is in another zone, and Neeraj Shridhar is just there so that they can call it the title track of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.

It is pretty evident that both of them have been brought in because popular hain toh inke naam pe bik jayega. Felt the same for Diljit in Chal Kudiye song from Jigra. Koi connection nahi lekin popular hai toh ghusa do.

Remember when Akon sang for Chammak Challo or when Snoop Dogg rapped in Singh is Kinng? Those worked because they integrated the them in the song very well. It was artistic and it was fun. If Pitbull and Diljit sang a fresh promotional song, it might have worked but here they feel so forced in a song which has a totally different vibe.

Club Treatment

Wonder why the original Hare Krishna Hare Ram worked so well? That is because apart from being a great song, the video was very unexpected. Akshay Kumar was in his Banaras wala avatar from the film but surrounded by hippie foreigner girls. It was different, it was unseen, it had the x factor, so we liked it. But why would people be interested in watching something they have seen a thousand times?

Kartik is a great dancer, there’s no doubt about it, but we never see him in a memorable song the way we used to talk about Shahid or Hrithik. Just think why? Earlier even the flop films had good songs. But today the most important songs of the biggest films fail to have an impact.

Club Treatment (a term by your truly) is the most lazy and easy way to shoot a song nowadays. Production department has a team of excellent set designers who regularly build such sets. A choreographer teaches the steps. A DoP shoots. You don’t even need the director here. It does not need creativity, brains or efforts as much as you would need them if you wanted to do something that has not been done before.

Cut to any song that is shot differently. You will see the effort in both thought and execution. Kartik ka costume, goggles, lighting, sab purana chipka diya hai, kisi cheez mein effort nahi dala hai.

Corporate Culture

Day by day it is getting evident that studios have become corporates. They think and breath numbers and money and don’t give two hoots about creativity. Pretty sure high salaried MBAs would have thought that it would be great idea to include Pitbull and Diljit Dosanjh. The stats would have shown positive possibilities, the numbers would have been in their favour, and maybe some brand deals would have been made seeing the projected numbers. Everything is a product for them now.

What these people are not realising is that, films are not products. You can’t apply the same principles to films as that of a smartphone or soap or shoes. Films work on emotions and the studios have left emotions far behind. All that is left is the moolah, the numbers, the hashtags, and how to target young kids who are gullible and easy to fool/please.

Disclaimer to Kartik Fans

Please do not think this review is against your beloved Kartik or think that I am an Akshay fan. You guys need to come out of this blind love and fanwar culture. This review is for the makers. The studios, the producers who dictate the terms. Most of the time the actor does not understand these stuff, they only do what they are told. So it is not their fault.

If you really want the best for you star, you need to to say the right things at the right time. Actors too need to understand these these and take a stand. But they won’t understand this if all they see is blind love and blind hatred. We need to speak up, and we need to say things in a civilized manner.

The reputation is already getting ruined but that is because of your process, not because people are not liking your product.

My old audience knows I have been saying these things for a really long time now. At a time when media and janta both praised the same practices alike, and I was abused by fans. Because we did not speak up, things have gone so bad that now too many are talking about it. If we still don’t speak up, they will become even worse, and our beloved film industry will show us only manufactured projects and we will lose the sense of art and creativity altogether. Hope this article makes people think. That’s all I wish.
