Same directors, same story, different actors.
Bollywood remakes toh banti rehti hain, kabhi Hindi films ki, kabhi Gujarati ki , kabhi South ki toh kabhi Hollywood ki. Lekin kuch remakes aise hain jo original film ke makers ne hi khud direct kiye. Interestingly, all the directors have been from south. Some of the films are big blockbusters, and some are flops. Here’s OCD Times presenting a list of films which were remade by the same directors.
1. Sarfira – Sudha Kongara
Sarfira is the latest Akshay Kumar starrer, which is a remake of Suriya’s most popular and successful movie Soorarai Pottru. It was a direct OTT release, but Sarfira released in theatres on July 12, 2024. Sarfira is produced by Suriya himself along with his wife, Jyothika. Suriya will also be having a cameo role in Sarfira. The original film, Soorarai Pottru, was selected as one among ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.
Soorarai Pottru – OTT Blockbuster
Sarfira – TBA

2. Kabir Singh – Sandeep Reddy Vanga
Everyone knows Kabir Singh was the turning point of Shahid Kapoor’s career. No one expected such a toxic and violent role from Shahid, who has mostly played the nice guy all his career. Kabir Singh was the official remake of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey. Sandeep Reddy Vanga remade his own film in Hindi, and it became a huge success for the makers.
Did you know? Before Shahid, Arjun Kapoor was considered for the role of Kabir Singh, but Arjun backed out.
Arjun Reddy – Hit
Kabir Singh – Blockbuster

3. Vikram Vedha – Pushkar Gayatri
Vikram Vedha, starring Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan in the leading roles, was a remake of the tamil film with the same title, starring Vijay Sethupathi and R. Madhavan. The remake wasn’t necessary as the original film was available in a Hindi dubbed version, yet the makers decided to direct a Hindi remake.
Did you know? R. Madhavan was supposed to reprise his role in the Bollywood remake, and before Hrithik, the makers approached SRK for the role of Vedha. However, due to some reasons, SRK rejected it.
Vikram Vedha (Tamil) – Blockbuster
Vikram Vedha (Hindi) – Flop

4. Bodyguard – Siddique
One of the biggest blockbusters of Salman Khan’s career, Bodyguard, was a remake of Bodyguard, starring Dileep and Nayanthara. The album of Bodyguard was a chartbuster and featured songs like ‘I Love You’ and ‘Teri Meri Kahaani.’
Did you know? Siddique directed only one Hindi film in his filmography, and it became a blockbuster.
Bodyguard (Original) – Hit
Bodyguard (Hindi) – Blockbuster

5. Jersey – Gautam Naidu Tinnanuri
Jersey, starring Shahid Kapoor, was a remake of Jersey, starring Nani. While both films made an emotional impact on audiences, the Shahid Kapoor starrer wasn’t able to achieve a hit status at the box office. This was partly because the original Jersey was already available in a Hindi dubbed version for free.
Did you know? Currently, Shahid Kapoor is working on “Deva,” which is a remake of the South cult hit “Mumbai Police,” starring Prithviraj Sukumaran. His third south remake.
Jersey (Telugu) – Hit
Jersey (Hindi) – Flop

6. Laxmii – Raghava Lawrence
Laxmii, starring Akshay Kumar, was a direct OTT release and a remake of Kanchana. Kanchana was so horrifying that it received an A-rated certification from the Censor Board, whereas “Laxmii” got a U/A certificate because the makers wanted to make this movie suitable for all ages. Both films were directed by the same director, but Laxmii wasn’t critically acclaimed due to it’s inferior quality.
Did you know? Raghava Lawrence, at one point stepped down as the director of Laxmii claiming that he was disrespected. However, he returned soon after.
Kanchana – Blockbuster
Laxmii – Successful OTT Release
