R For Ranbir, R For Range – Happy 42nd Birthday To One Of The Best Actors Of India

Ranbir Kapoor is probably the only new gen actor who has cemented his position as a superstar in Bollywood. Ranbir possesses a perfect mix of acting range and star power making him one of the most bankable actor of the country. Whether it be the innocence in Barfi or rage in Animal, he can pull off any kind of role with ease. Here we are, at OCD Times, on the occasion of Ranbir’s birthday bringing to you the diversity in the types of characters Ranbir Kapoor has played.

1. Jordan (Rockstar, 2011) Ranbir

Talk about acting with eyes. That’s what Ranbir Kapoor managed to do in Rockstar. The emotion of pain, sorrow, rage and turmoil inside JJ felt a bit too real in Rockstar. That famous zoning out in Kun Faya Kun and the outstanding climax performance in Naadan Parinde are a testament to the fact that Ranbir Kapoor is a very special actor. The movie has achieved a cult status like Tamasha and the character of Jordan has turned iconic, all thanks to Ranbir’s performance.

2. Barfi (Barfi!, 2012)

Convincingly pulling off a mute character is not everyone’s cup of tea. Ranbir in Barfi! was exceptional. It was an extremely challenging role as the character did not have any dialogues in the movie. Ranbir had to purely emote and communicate Barfi’s feelings to the audience and he did it beautifully. To be honest, Ranbir does not even need to try hard to emote, his eyes are enough. My favourite scene in the movie was when a heartbroken Barfi communicates with Ileana through sign language and, we as the audience, understood none of it (the sign language), but understood everything (the emotions). We felt for the character all because of the performance. That’s what a brilliant actor is capable of.

3. Ved (Tamasha, 2015)

The character of Ved from Tamasha is close to the heart of many people including me. Ranbir captured both the quirky side of Ved as well as the inner struggle inside him with a lot of conviction. His eyes were enough in many of the scenes to communicate Ved’s feeling of being lost in the rat race. Ved’s vulnerability, his breakdowns, his emotional outbursts and the feeling of completely losing his mind were pulled off outstandingly by Ranbir. No wonder why the character of Ved as well as the film has achieved a cult status!

4. Jagga Bagchi (Jagga Jasoos, 2017)

Ranbir Kapoor in Jagga Jasoos played the role of a stammering detective who sings to communicate. Ranbir’s performance was outstanding to say the least. He brought the much needed charm and innocence to Jagga which made the character extremely likeable. What really stood out was how Ranbir handled the film’s musical vibe. His character had to sing most of his lines, and he pulled it off without it feeling forced. While the movie didn’t do well at the box office, I quite loved it and am hoping for Basu and Ranbir to revive the franchise. Maybe, not a musical this time?

5. Sanjay Dutt (Sanju, 2018)

Ranbir Kapoor in Sanju is one of the best performances in biopics made by Bollywood. Playing a character who people have been familiar to is a very difficult task, which was successfully done by Ranbir. Be it Dutt’s mannerisms, his body language, walking style or just the way he talks, Ranbir effortlessly pulled off every single detail about Dutt’s personality. There were moments in the film where it felt like it was Sanjay Dutt playing himself in the movie. Sanju truly solidified Ranbir’s position as one of the best actors of the country.

6. Shiva (Brahmāstra, 2022)

Okay, I know you are thinking what is Shiva doing in this list. Just hear me out. It is not at all an easy task to film almost the entirety of the movie in a studio with green screen where you have to act solely on the basis of imagination. There are nothing but lights and Ranbir had to do pull off the difficult task of convincing the audience that the element does exist which he did amazingly well.

As stated by the actor, there was nothing too special about his performance in Brahmastra and I totally agree with him, but we simple can’t discredit the fact that acting on imagination and convincing the audience is a task that only a few actors can do.

7. Ranvijay Singh Balbir (Animal, 2023)

Where do I even start with Animal. For me, this was Ranbir’s best performance till date. He convincingly played the same character from a school boy to a 70 year old aged Ranvijay. The rage within Ranvijay, the animal residing in his inner self and emotional side of him in the climax, it was perfect! Everything to the last minute detail!! If this was not enough, he went one step ahead with his portrayal of Aziz in the post credits where he felt like a different person altogether. That voice modulation was simply insane. Animal also broke several domestic and international box office records which has rightfully made Ranbir a SUPERSTAR!

Now, that we have talked about his range as an actor, let’s discuss further about the actor.

What makes Ranbir special?

The best thing about Ranbir is his dedication to the roles he does whilst never going too overboard in his approach. We have already established that he is a brilliant actor and no-one can deny the fact. There are so many interview clips of actors crediting Ranbir for the same. What makes Ranbir even more special is the sense of mystery surrounding him. He is not on social media and has no PR, which mostly keeps him away from the audience and his exclusivity remains intact. This makes the audiences crave to see him on the big screen.

What’s next for Ranbir?

Ranbir probably has the best lineup of any actor. First of all, today, on the occassion of his birthday, it has been confirmed that Ranbir will be a part of Dhoom 4 as the antagonist!! Besides, the actor will be next seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s love traingle titled Love & War alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. His next after Love & War is possibly the biggest film of Indian Cinema that is Ramayana which is touted to be a duology where he will play the role of Shree Ram.

Alongside Ramayana, Ranbir will also be seen in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal Park which already is a blockbuster in the making. There are no confirmations about the Brahmastra sequel yet, but I do hope it is in the pipeline.

Outside of films, on the occassion of his birthday, Ranbir has also launched his own sneaker brand, Arks, which he talked about on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast. Wishing him all the best with that too!
