Trailer Overview
A trailer is something that makes or breaks the film’s opening. Everything else is just add-ons and follow ups. The trailer of Kesari Chapter 2 nails it perfectly. Let’s get into the details.
Trailer Length
Very less it happens that a long trailer is interesting and is cut well, with out revealing too much. This trailer of Kesari Chapter 2 is almost perfect. Personally, I would always prefer to se thee least possible footage from the film, but I think that’s a standard complain that I will always have. But because it is so well cut, the longer duration is not a problem at all.
Smartly Cut Trailer
An editor has the entire film with them but what they choose to show is a choice they make. This is something I always say but people don’t understand this because their entire focus is on stars and fanwars.
Kesari Chapter 2 is a courtroom drama so the trailer opens with the questing of Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer by C Sankaran Nair, setting the tone of that the film is about. The follow ups are the key ingredients of the massacre itself, giving it an emotional tone. That is a choice of how they wanted to start the trailer.
Ab case hai toh opposing lawyer bhi hoga hi. Now we get to see R Madhavan. Unka intro hai, All the best bolna matlab versus wala tone set karna and a few lines of asking for proof. Another good way to keep the momentum without telling a lot. Not showing a lot is a choice.
Ananya Panday plays an assistant to Akshay Kumar. She says how can you let this go, meaning she inspires him to file the case. She gets one good line in the trailer, “Does’t England has Queens?” This is again a smart move I would say, not showing much of her because eveyone know that people are ready to troll certain people with reason, as they like trolling. Again, this was a choice.
The reason I’m saying “choice” so much because not every trailer is good. A lot of them are long and a lot of them reveal a lot. Every bit of music, every title card, the sequence, the footage, every single thing is a choice an editor makes. So when there is a criticism on the trailer, know that it is not an attack on the star.
Plot Reveal – What We Know
We will be seeing the incident in the film once again. There should be some intro about the characters in the beginning then the incident. Fir news milegi, fir Akshay Kumar ka reaction hoga, fir Ananya inspire karegi, fir case hoga, aur fir aisa case kaise ho gaya uski charcha hogi. Opposing lawyer suggest kiya jayega, sab ready honge, aur case start hoga.
The courtroom drama will be the core of the film and wo kam dikhaya acchi baat hai. Then Madhavan asks for proof. For some reason Sankaran Nair loses credibility and thus the black ink scene. Then he goes on a journey to find out proof. Ananya also helps him. The numerous shots in the last minute of the trailer show a lot of things. Reason why I don’t like to see a lot of footage. Fear of Censor Board
I think the rating will be U/A. The only thing I fear that they would either blur a few scenes from the massacre and mute the dialogue, “F**k You,” by Akshay Kumar, or remove them completely. Impact kam ho jata hai in ye sab karke. Par sunte kahan hain ye log.
Raju Mode On
“The Empire Is Shrinking.” This scene was hilarious, and a great way to end the trailer. Because we all know and love Akshay Kumar – The Meme King, we can’t stop ourselves from thinking of his Raju Mode from various comedy films even in such a serious situation.
Title Criticism
One thing I cannot overlook, even after years when the film becomes a blockbuster, is the decision to name the film Kesari Chapter 2.
It is no secret that films are generally not working in today’s time. It is no secret that because a few sequels have worked, studios are running after sequels blindly like sheep in a hope to have successful films. 50+ sequels are in the works in Bollywood at this moment.
This film’s title was not revealed, but a few reports earlier suggested that the title was Sankaran Nair vs The Crown and later another name came up, Shankara. A title card in one of the promo assets shows a next Sankaran Vs The British Empire. I think this was the title till very recently until some genius thought to rename it after a successful film of Akshay Kumar in order to get a hit in these tough times. They did not have the confidence that this film would work on its own merit?
My criticism is only because this is such a powerful film. Everyone is loving it and rightly so. Marketing is also working well. So when you have such a strong content, why resort to gimmicks? Just because adat ban gayi hai? Ki kuch na kuch gimmick hi karenge, apne dam pe kuch karne ka bharosa hi nahi raha?
Ek aur Dharma ka example deta hu.. Bad Newz was titled Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam, a remake song was also in the film which was supposed to be a title track. But because the story dealt with pregnancy, they decided to name it after the hit film Good Newwz.
I’m calling these a gimmick because that’s not how these films began. They were standalone films. But they changed it last minute. If Good Newwz or Kesari 1 were flops, they would not have renamed the new films after them. That’s why.. Gimmick, ya Hindi mein bolei toh Tikdam. Studios need to have confidence and hire real, talented, creative people, not just MBAs with no sense of art.
