Trailer Cut
This is one of those rare times when the trailer cut is almost perfect. The length of 2:24 minute is something which is hard to see these days. Even though they did not release a teaser, they did not feel that they needed to compensate for that by increasing the length. Revealing too much footage was not the goal here, which was very nice.

Takes about 30 seconds to establish just the opening sequence. Good call, very well executed. The trailer mostly feels it tells the story in a linear fashion, from start start of the film to end. This really messes with the theatrical experience. Theatre mein pata hota hai next kya hone wala hai.
Still, it did not feel like they revealed the whole plot. But I would always want to know the least about a film before stepping into the theatre. The trailer needs to only excite me for the film, not tell me the full plot of the film. This will always be my point in every teaser ortrailer review. But as for Maa trailer, it was all not bad. It is quite clear the movie has many things to offer.
How Is This Shaitaan Universe?
Well, we don’t know that part exactly. And it’s nice, as this means we have something to look forward to while watching the film.
In the current scenario, whenever we hear a sequel or universe, the first thought is, ‘are they actually building something or is it forced like many others?’ Same thought most of the people had we heard Maa is in the Shaitaan Universe a few days back. We knew this film was being made and suddenly they announced a Universe close to the trailer release. But.. listen to this now..
If you remember the last scene in Shaitaan, where Ajay Devgn is talking to the captured Madhavan, he says, “Takat ka asli matlab samajhna hai, toh kabhi kisi Maa ko apne bachche ke liye ladte hue dekhna.” Does this mean this Universe was in planing since a long time? Or is it just a co-incidence? What do you think?
Universe Setup
Shaitaan is based in Uttrakahand. The family lived in Dehradun and went to a farmhouse in remote area. Maa trailer gives the idea that the film is set in West Bengal. So it will be interesting to see how they set up this Universe.
Some frames and bit of storyline is similar in both. Taking girls away, Kajol being drowned by all the girls. Also, what is the timeline of the two films? Did Ajay Devgn’s character already knew about the events of Maa and that is why he said that line at the end of Shaitaan?
Horror Element
Maa trailer actually gives you a fair idea about the horror part of the film. It looks much more than what the horror-comedy genre offers. I don’t think they are horror. They are totally fun films. Shaitaan was not horror too. It was an engaging thriller. As for Maa, it has horror elements and they look fantastic, but at the same time it does not look like a true horror film, it has a lot of drama and things going on, with the element of Maa Kali. So darr toh lagna hi nahi.
Confession – I can’t watch horror. True horror I mean. I used to when I was younger, but bade hoke kuhc toh badal gaya. Funny, right? Ab jo hai so hai. In recent times I liked the teaser and trailer of Chhorii 2, but heard that it was not that good. While I had to stop watching the trailer of Khauf series which is on Amazon Prime. Could not complete it. Later heard that it was a nice series.
Beautiful Frames & VFX
I always say I’m okay with VFX not being perfect. But at the same time, the hearts wants it to be perfect. The VFX in Maa trailer is acceptable but not perfect. Sometimes on the big screen such vfx look jarring and reduce the impact of the scene. But sometimes, they feel very normal. Hope it is the latter in this film. And if possible, they should work on it till the release.
The film looks aesthetically beautiful. So many frames looks like pieces of art. Set design, production design, colors, everything looks very well thought of. Dil khush ho gaya.
Folklore ?
Maa trailer reminded me of Munjya, due to the spirit and tree factor. Just saying reminded me, not saying copy, inspired or anything like that. The movie must be having a local folklore like every MHCU films, though real or fictional I can’t say. Another shot when the tree shows red eyes remind me of the poster of Vvan. Baki Shaitaan wale elements toh bataye hi upar.
Did You Notice?
In the endcard, where all the credits are mentioned, everyone (both male and female) have written their mother’s name as their middle name. From actors, to director, to producers to all the crew members. Such a small thing but so impactful. Ye choti choti cheezein hi matter karti hain art aur artists ko. Inhi sabki baat karta hu main humesha. Put your heart in it, don’t just rely on gimmicks.
Marketing
No big praises in the media. No plot reveal in media. No universe announcement by media. They worked in silence and focused on quality. Only a few set images came out where Ajay Devgn was holding the steady cam and Kajol was standing with a big curved sword. No gimmicks at all.
The film had wrapped in May 2024 itself yet they did not do any media reveal unlike other films and studios. They had a motion poster for the announcement in March 2025 and then total silence. Only 4 days back they revealed a poster saying it was a universe and had everyone’s attention organically. Then 3 new posters in 3 days, each day getting the expectations high. The quality design of the posters also intrigued the audience. Then a solid trailer today, with a sweet touch of including Maa’s name in the middle.
Simple but solid planning. The film looks promising. Hope it is something that turns this into an unexpectedly good universe.
