Ramayana Glimpse Review | A Stunning Promo That Can’t Hide 2 Major Flaws | Namit Malhotra, Ranbir Kapoor

Rama Glimpse Overview

Rama’s glimpse from Ramayana left me with mixed feelings. While there are some very positive things, there are also some major concerns. Let’s get into it in detail.

The Scale

My biggets takeaway from h this was that we are going to witness Ramayana on a scale we have never seen before. The first two shots of the glimpse shows you the scale of the battle. The Ayodhya Palace, the Dandak and Kishkindha forests, and finally the Pushpak Vimaan. Just imagine the IMAX experience.

World Creation

Every film has its own world and its own rules and logic. But creating that world is important. Here the world looks big and grand. It is beautiful and a visual treat for the big screen. But at the same time, it does not look real.

We all have seen a lot of movies. While its fine for Narnia and Harry Potter to look a bit like fantasy, while we watch Marvel we expect to see the heroes set in the real world. IronMan, Hulk Spiderman, all fighting in New York, and other cities look like they are blending in the real world.

Ramayana on the other hand looks gamified. Much of the setting, be it the Ayodhya Palace, the forests or the sky, all look like that of a game than set in the real world.

While its a movie, we all tend to forgive some percentage of creative freedom but when it crosses a line, things get very visible and create a constant discomfort. And that constant feeling of ‘something is not right’ make us not like the film as much.

The VFX and AI

The VFX looks off to be honest. While I love the scale and world creation, the VFX is not what we would expect from such a big movie. Some of the shots look like they are heavily done by AI and not DNEG, the 8 times Oscar Winning company.

This one shot looks like its 100% AI. Look at the people on the sides. If you have seen AI content on instagram and Youtube, you can easily understand what I mean. Here it just looks like its done way better than those reels.

The Rakshas

This disappointed me the most. Demons or Rakshas, or any creature in the world are very specific to the regions they are from. For example, a Dragon in the West is different from a Dragon in China. Similarly, the Indian Rakshas or Asur are very different from Western Demons, Ogres, and Trolls.

And this is biggest problem we noticed in 4 shots in the Rama glimpse. The demons look modern and western, not Indian at all. This makes us feel more about the film looking like a game, rather than set in the real world.

Ranbir As Rama

The best thing about the Rama Glimpse is Ranbir as Lord Ram. He has the calmness and divinity on his face that we associate with Prabhu Ram.

Though I’m not liking that they are calling him Rama instead of Ram. Ramayana tak theek tha, par Rama, Ravana, har jagah extra A kyu lagan bhai??

The Music

A few of my friends did not like it, but I loved it. I like that tey did not go the divine way this time like the announcement video. Har bar bhakti feel nahi chahiye hoti. It’s ultimately a film and should feel like one. Many promos and films lose the plot by trying to cash out on the feeling of devotion.

The Hans Zimmer and A R Rahman combo is working well. The change of music towards the end while showing Ravan walk, and the Pushpak Viman itself, is very good. I’m very hopeful from the background score of this film.

The Cut

The overall cut was not very satisfactory to be honest. It felt more like a compilation only. Different shots of Lord Ram. Taking care that no other character is seen in the shot. Some text screens just like last time. Placed on a supporting bgm.

One part was touching though. They showed Ayodhya Palace, then Ram bowing down to his father, Raja Dashrath, wide shot, close shot, followed by him releasing his ashes. That was planned and well executed.

Overall jitna expect kiya tha uske hisab se dull laga. July mein aya tha annoucnement. Uske baad se sirf baatein sunn rahe hain Namit Malhotra ki. Ki ye kar diya wo kar diya. Hope badh jati hai isse. Lekin delivery uske hisab se flat lagi. Ye last Diwali pe aa jata aur beech mein itne statements nahi ate toh sahi lagta ye glimpse.

The Media

I’m so tired of the media hyping up everything. Sometimes they are paid, and sometime they are just bound to say such stuff due to their loyalty towards the producers. The samller accounts are just there for the reach.

Okay I get it you loved it in IMAX. But what about the critical analysis? No journalist is talking about it. Only that it is epic and that its unimaginalble in IMAX.

Guys, the whole world is not watching this glimpse video in IMAX. Not ever in theatre. We are watching it on mobile phone, laptops, and television. Not many films are being released for people to catch it in theatre as well. Dhurandhar maximum logon ne dekh li, Bhooth Bangla 17 ko ayegi. Humara perception aaj hi ban gaya set ho gaya ye dekh ke. Aur jo dekha wo apke previous statements se match nahi karta. Apke expert team ne ye sab nahi bataya apko?

Even when the film finally releases, not everyone is gonna watch it in IMAX, simple reason being that the sceeens are very less. So most people are gonna watch in normal theatre only. IMAX IMAX bolke mat becho. MAke it so good that people wanna watch it. IMAX toh waise bhi full ho hi jayega tension hi nahi uski.

Stop The Statements

Namit Malhotra sir, you said, “Ramayana is from India, to the world.” But we did not feel it was Indian.
We heard a statement yesterday, that “We have made a world like Lord of the Rings and Characters as Avatar.” World wali baat theek hai lekin wo Middle-Earth tha, a fictional world, so some of the fantasy stuff was okay. Ramayana is based on the real world.

Secondly, the characters are not like Avatar at all. The demons look western and from the gaming world. People are equating Ramayana with Adipurush and you with Om Raut.

Please stop the statements. We know you are buinding perception with the global distribution network, but if your words don’t match what we see, if the people reject or don’t appreciate the film as intended, the collections will not follow. You see the Dhurandhar wave now? Ramayana wave needs to be bigger than that for the budget recovery. So please stop the statements and take every feedback on the internet very seriously.

Final Thoughts

As for the VFX looking off, it has been observed for long that teasers as trailers arrive with unfinished vfx work, and they get better by the time the film releases.

All criticism aside, it’s too early to judge the entire film. Even if the world and cretures look gamified, I still feel we are going to witness Ramayana at the biggest scale ever, and with the kind of starcast, acting talent, and director we have, we will get something out of the world. Yes, I have that feeling for now. So waiting for the next promotional assets to come out.
