Trailer Length and Plot
Too long and too much? Sky Force trailer length is 2 minute 48 seconds and as it almost always happens, they have revealed too much of the plot. The full movie I would say. We know the character dynamics and camaraderie of Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya. Rule breaker youngster vs dedicated senior officer. Training sessions. Attack by Pakistan. Akshay convincing to attack. They attack. Veer gets left behind. Wife wala emotion and backstory. Akshay gets emotional. Air Force is not interested to investigate. Akshay convinces. Ending is open ended, we don’t know if he is alive or not.
Kuch reh gaya plot mein? Bas climax aur baki fill in the blanks ke liye jayenge. Why couldn’t they cut the trailer in a better way? Plot batana is not equal to trailer banana.
Cast
Akshay Kumar – He is the best thing about the trailer. Though it looks like he is not doing anything we have not seen before. Maybe its the writing but I’m looking forward to the scene where he is convincing a jury to find Veer.
Veer Pahariya – Looks great. Very handsome and smart with an apt Air Force officer look. Acting wise cant judge, there wasn’t much, but one dialogue delivery was not bad.
Sara Ali Khan – It was bad. As bad as we have seen here before. I fail to understand why her dialogue delivery is always so underwhelming.
Nimrat Kaur – Just saw he in two frames, no dialogues. Mandatory office ki wife ka role hoga.
Sharad Kelkar – Just one frame. Chhota but accha role hoga I’m guessing.
Trailer Cut
The trailer is interesting. I was able to watch till the end without getting bored. Starts well with the voice over, but then goes on into telling the full plot. Yes, I’ll watch it coz I have to review but there is nothing too exciting about it. Half of the things we have already seen in different movies. If I did not have to review, I would have skipped the theatrical watch.
There is no major high point or low point in the trailer. It mostly goes on like a flat line on the graph with very little variation. Background music is decent, nothing extraordinary. Title cards are quite similar to Fighter’s.
The trailer would have made more sense if it was focused on the Air Force part more and had skipped the officer missing in action and everything after that. This way, the audience would be surprised by the plot in theatre and there would be some curiosity left to watch the film in theatre.
Last Air Force Film
4 films were announced on the Indian Air Force, roughly around the same time. Kangana starrer Tejas came first, which had a fictional plot. Then came Fighter, followed by Operation Valentine, both revolved around the Pulwama attack and the subsequent airstrike. Sky Force is the last one based on the 1965 war of India and Pakistan.
Aerial Action
Looks like everyone got the idea after Top Gun Maverick, but nobody wanted to as good as Top Gun. While the Air Force and fighting for the country is common, Top Gun Maverick focused more on Fighter jets, pilots, the difficulty of mission, and the small detailings related to the maneuvering of jets, the G forces, what a pilot goes through, etc.
Whereas the Indian films used the Fighter Jets as cool opening shots and tools to go take revenge, focusing more on the emotional aspects, dramatic writing, forced patriotism, cheesy dialogues, etc. Basically the template stuff.
Fighter mein bhi kaha tha aerial action mein slow motion dekh ke maza nahi ata hai. Yaha bhi same old kiddish scenes dal diye hain. Vfx does not look bad and few aerial action scenes are good as well. Especially the ones right before the title appears. I still have hope for some good aerial action.
