Son of Sardaar 2 looks like a mixed bag of good comedy and old plot.
Opening with Nostalgia
Nostalgia is the new formula. Corporate culture has killed art toh ye naya tareeka nikala hai ki pehle jo accha banaya tha usi ke naam pe bechte hain.
Marketing mein kaam karne walo ko pata hai kaise meetings mein discussion hote hain. I think from that point of view, “He survived Punjab. Will he survive Scotland,” was a genius tagline. Opening the trailer with the shots of the first movie was also a genius move to remind people of all ages about the previously loved film.
Psychologically, they are playing the audience. Genius on their part. But is the audience a fool? Few movies have worked but not all. And most of them, despite whatever they earned, have been very bad films both technically and creatively. Kyu hum mediocrity accept kar rahe hain?
Trailer Cut
If I just look at the trailer objectively, it was quite nice. Ajay Devgn looks like the same old innocent Jassi in the first scene where Bebe is a pole dancer. Best part of the trailer.
Then we get the intro of Mrunal Thakur’s family in Scotland, the problem of Roshni Walia’s wedding and arrival of Ravi Kishan with Mukul Dev and Vindu Dara Singh. Sanjay Mishra don hai kya kya? Jo bhi hai funny toh hai.
Comedy film hai, toh ye nahi kahunga ki puri story bata di galat kiya, par dekho puri story bata toh di hai ek tarah se. Overall trailer theek cut kiya hai. Not great but not bad either.
Comedy and Plot
Comedy is not working for me much. Few punches mad eme chuckle but overall things are not coming out naturally. They look more like gags of a sketch than actual comedy.
Shaadi mein jhooth aur confusion – na jaane kitni films ban gayi plot pe. Singh is Kinng, Mubarakaan, De Dana Dan, 14 Phere, Mere Husband Ki Biwi. Variations of the same lies and confusion leading to comedy. So not something very new.
Son of Sardaar 1 ka plot fir bhi unique tha comedy ke liye. ghar ke andar hai toh nahi maar sakte, bahar ate hi sab ready the talwar leke. Mazedar tha.
No Sanjay Dutt
Kaafi jagah suna tha ki Sanjay Dutt bhi hain film mein. Trailer dekh ke toh laga nahi aisa.
Mukul Dev
I think hum sabhi ko Mukul Dev ko dekh ke accha laga. I hope at least unka wo flavour wo maza barkarar rakha ho is part mein bhi.
Music
Son of Sardaar 2 title song mein wo baat nahi hai jo first ke title song mein thi. Thoda hi fark hai par hai. Wo Pehla Duja wala song toh bakwas hai. Sunne mein bhi aur dekhne mein bhi. Na hi dalte. Par nahi, music rights bhi toh bechne hain. Last mein wo Po Po Po wale gaane ka remake tha? Exact samajh nahi aya par I think wahi hoga, nostalgia ke liye. Koi naya bhi ho sakta hai similar concept aur dance step ke sath. Let’s see.
Final Thoughts
13 saal baad sequel aa rahi hai lekin lag nahi raha 13 saal mein hum evolve hue hain. Kuch change hua ai toh bas footage quality and budget. Ye bhi nostalgia ke naam pe chal jayegi aisa lag raha hai par kuch bahaut alag bana diya ho waisa kuch nahi laga. Cringe toh nahi lag rahi. Looks like the film will be a decent watch.
But as someone who watches a lot of films and works around movie marketing, kitna media mein badha chadha ke bola jata hai, waisa kuch feel nahi hua.
