“Iran wants to kill him, Israel has ditched him, and India has deserted him.“
Teaser Overview
Really liked an action film trailer after a long time. Oh wait, Dhunrandhar bhi tha, right.
This is a very John Abraham zone. Why did you take this long to release Tehran, Maddock Films? This should have come earlier.

Creative Opening
That explosion shot, that freeze frame was such a creative way to open the trailer. I always talk about choice of shots, being creative, being different.. Well, this was it.
And it was a very clean vfx shot as well. One of my vfx artist friends from the industry messaged me yesterday, appreciating this shot. I hadn’t watched it then as I was out to watch Dhadak 2 & Son of Sardaar 2, and I don’t watch trailers on mobile phones, without earphones, especially when I’m out. Cinephile bhi hu aur review bhikarta hu, toh ab aise hi dekhne ki adat hai.

The Trailer Cut
The length is 2:25 minutes when the title card ends, uske baad toh bas Zee5 logo animation hai. Such a good length. Why would I not appreciate the trailer? They gave a basic sense of the plot, but did not reveal it. No unnecessary songs, at least not in the trailer. Though we have heard that there is a promotional song (not part of the film), with John Abraham and Elnaaz Norouzi. Haan iss bar Nora Fatehi nahi hai :p
Using Music and SFX
Sfx is short for sound effects, same as Vfx is short for visual effects. Very less trailers utilize the music and sound effects to pace the narrative of the trailer, giving impactful dialogues or key moments of the trailer as per the sound. Tehran trailer does that beautifully. I always love it when bullet-firing scenes use the sound of bullets firing as part of the sound design of the trailers. Bawal.

Plot Reveal
Basic plot batane ke alawa kuch khas reveal nahi kiya. All we know that there are bomb blasts in 3 countries, all are linked, John is in Delhi Police and then joins special forces for this mission. Things go south and India abandons him, like they do when international sensitivities are there. All RAW agents know that. We just don’t know if John is RAW or not.
We know Neeru Bajwa is his wife. He know Alyy Khan is his senior/handler. We don’t know the names or roles of Manushi Chhillar, Elnaaz Norouzi, and Madhurima Tuli, not even their names or a single dialogue.
We don’t know about the exact mission(s) of John and what exactly went wrong. So in total, there are so many things to unvcover in the film, that has not been revealed in the trailer already, like so many other films.

John Abraham Zone
We all love John in such films. People talk about them all the time on the internet. Madras Cafe, Batla House, Romeo Akbar Walter, The Diplomat, and now Tehran. Attack, Parmanu and Dishoom were way different, but that soldier/country/patriotism angle was there.

Why OTT
As per what I saw in the trailer, I feel this should have been a theatrical release. The Diplomat ultimately worked, but the release date was right. Maybe Maddock could not find any good window (without other films storming every week) to have a longer run and they were tired of waiting.
But if the film was as good as the trailer, I feel it could have worked in theatres with good marketing. Ab log 14th ko War 2 dekhenge theatre pe aur wapas ake (ya agle din) Tehran. Spy vs Spy. Fir compare karenge :p

Perception
Perception matters so much. Aaj John Abraham hai, jisko log utna bada star nahi mante. Socho exact same film hoti, frame by frame same, lekin hero koi aur hota, log pagal ho chuke hote.
Socho same jagah Salman Khan hota, aur baki sab exact same, reaction imagine karo. Hrithik Roshan hota toh? Aur socho John nahi, koi fresh face hota. Jitna log aaj dekh rahe hain utna bhi nahi dekhte.
Ott bhara pada hai acche content se. Lekin logon ko perception ki, stars ki beemari hai. Kachra dekhenge, gaali bhi denge, par star ke peeche hi pade rahenge. Nahi ye John ya Tehran ke liye nahi, in general bol raha hu. War 2 se Hrithik-NTR ko replace karke 2 new faces le aao, same level of performance, entire film being same to same, the reaction of the people will change. Thoda soch ke dekho iss bare mein, interesting thought hai. Fir batana what do you think.
