“You’re a Soldier. He is a Soldier. And This is War“
Teaser Overview
My first reaction was.. Arre pura plot nahi dikhaya.. wow! Unexpected. Apart from that, there were some creative approaches (again unexpected from Yrf), and some generic stuff. Let’s go into the details.
Creative Opening
Both Hrithik and NTR, Agent Kabir and Agent Vikram, are heard taking their oaths while joining RAW. Kabir’s oath is still usual whereas NTR’s oath is unusual. But both end up committing their everything for INDIA. This was a creative approach, a choice made by the editor, which I loved.
We see glimpse after glimpse, various shots of the two characters supporting their respective dialogues. This goes on till 1:27 into the trailer out of the total length of 2:35 minutes, and we have no major plot reveal, apart from the already known Hrithik Vs NTR angle.
The Generic Stuff
Now this follows the long montage of short action scenes. While they were smart enough to show very small clips so that it does not spoil the fun of the full action sequences, I feel there were still tooooooo many shots. People are smart, they have seen thousand plus film, unless you are making trailers just for kids, please respect the intellect of the audience. While watching the sequence in theatres, the audience knows what the hero or villain will do next, as they have seen that shot. Maza kam hota hai. Please samjho iss baat ko.
Trailer Cut
Loved the duration. Loved the opening (upar bata hi diya). I still feel the action montage sequence could have been trimmed. Thoda kam dikha dete toh better rehta. But still bahaut nahi dikhaya.
Sabse zyada khushi iss baat ki hai ki wahi template trailer cut approach nahi liya. Had a creative opening and a creative ending.
Plot wise, we know its gonna be Hrithik vs NTR. We know Luthra turns against Kabir. Him spitting on Kabir was something I never expected as he was always in awe of him. Kiara is an agent. She and Kabir are a couple. But then she also turns against him. Aakhir Kabir ne aisa kiya kya?
“You are a soldier (few cool shots), He is a soldier, (few more cool shots), and this is War.” Kya sahi tareeka hai na trailer end karne ka. Theme pe apt and feel mein on point. Maza aya.
Plot Reveal
Accha hai kuch bahi bataya plot ka. Kya ho raha hai, kyu ho raha hai, kuch nahi pata. We just that two grown-ass men, are fighting across the globe, just because Ayan Mukerji se Brahmastra 2 nahi ban rahi. Wait.. umm.. maaf karna kabih kabhi multiverse mein nikal jata hu.
So I’m very happy that I’ll be going to the theatres with a mystery, with an expectation. And I’ll not be disappointed. This was a very unexpected move from Yrf, give their track record of bad marketing in recent times and the overall plot reveal problem of Bollywood.
Hrithik and NTR ka Naatu Naatu glimpse bhi nahi dikhaya so that is also good. But samajh nahi aa raha ye aisi situation mein kaha aur kyu naachenge?
Accha ek spoiler du? Dekh lo agli line skip kar sakte ho. Kiara Advani ka film mein naam Kavya Luthra hai. Matlab Col. Luthra ki beti hai. Salute marte hue badge dhyan se dekho.
VFX complaints
Nahi lagi iss bar. Ek bhi frame aisa nahi laga ki kya bakwas hai. Abhi bhi thoda time hai, I guess kaam chal raha hoga. Sabko pata hai end tak chalta hai vfx ka kaam, so kisi ne kuch notice kiya bhi hoga toh I guess fix ho jayega release tak.
Tiger 3 kaafi time like bani thi toh uske trailer mein vfx complaints nahi thi, but Pathaan mein thi. Par Pathaan ne end tak sahi kar liya tha. Theatre mein kuch itna nakli nahi lag raha tha jitna War 2 ke teaser mein sabne complain ki thi. Maine bhi. So I guess yaha bhi film mein sab sahi hi rahega.
Action Set Pieces
Well, I always say that this is India and thoda sa over the top hum accept karke chalte hain. Hollywood mein bhi over the top jate hain, but fark ye hai na, ki wo fir bhi bahaut hadd take usko believable bana dete hain. India mein na for granted le lete hain audience ko. Ki hero hai toh udega hi, hero hai toh superhuman strength se peetega hi, superhero size jump marega hi, etc. Hum kyu nahi issue upar uth pa rahe hain?
See the complaint is not because I hate any star of film. The complaint is only because I want to see better. Recently saw Mission Impossible: The Final Reconing, before that The Reacher series, and before that something else. I only difference I notice every time is the conviction to make it as realistic as possible, while maintaining the heroism and style.
Theek hai har samay logic aur physics nahi karna chahiye. But yaar kuch bhi toh mat dikaho. Kitni bhi height se kood raha hai, superhero landing kar raha hai. Udte plane ke upar lad rha hai. Plane ki speed pata hai? 50km/h ki chalti car ke upar nahi lad paoge, ye toh 600km/h ki speed se udta plane hai.
Impact of the Trailer
Upar kaafi tareef kar di aur uske reasons bhi diye. But theek se dekha jaye toh War 2 trailer fir bhi generic sa hi hai. Aisa nahi laga ki yar kuch alag hi bana diya hai, never seen before kind of film. Bas trailer cut ka approach creative tha. As for the film, the trailer will only excite kids and fans. Not adults who have been watching films since decades. Humne bahaut kuch dekh liya hai ab kuch alag dikaho.
I know its difficult for fans and young people to understand this, as they are somewhat biased for the love of their stars and refuse to accept anything rational, but this trailer would have worked brilliantly if the overall marketing of this film would have been done well. As we all know kuch khas toh kiya nahi hai yrf ne, just the bare minimum.
If there was a proper build-up fro War 2 since a year, with character posters, some promo materials of universe references, then the excitement near this trailer would be a lot more, and this trailer would have been received very well. As of now, the impact is just decent. Not something one would expect for a film looking to gross ₹1000 crores at the box office.
Tujhe Kuch Nahi Pata
Now one may say, ‘Saiyaara ka bhi trailer generic tha, aaj itni badi wave hai.’ True. But comparisons bhi sahi factors ko analyse karke karne chahiye. War 2 bumper opening aur total collection karegi ye sabko pata hai starting se. But iska matlab ye nahi hota ki marketing thandi karoge. Saiyaara was a one off exception. Ye exceptions bar bar nahi hote. Jaise ek hi saal mein Pathaan chali aur Tiger 3 utni nahi chali. Tiger 3 was not a total failure, just that it was not that impactful.
So exceptions ko leke nahi baithna chahiye. Universe hai, expectations bhi high hongi aur criticism bhi. Duniya ka best universe Marvel na banaya haia aur India mein Maddock ko chhod ke har universe ko gali padti hai. So we need to analyse why. Star ke pyaar ke chakkar mein gussa nahi ho jana chahiye. Kyuki bolenge nahi, toh studios ya koi bhi artist evolve kaise hoga?
